“Unusual” gas meter position

Does anybody else think that where this gas meter has been put is ridiculous (by a sink and a gas cooker - the nearest external wall is the other side of the sink unit)?

Mine's in a box outside the house, and in a previous house we had it in a cupboard - must be annoying that it takes up space like that!

Yes, it’s just so awkward - to box it in properly means not being able to open the door under the sink properly! No idea why it wasn’t put in a box on the outside wall. It’ll be expensive to move but forever annoying for it to stay where it is.

Mine is outside on the other side of the drive in the garden. I think I prefer it there than taking up space like that in the kitchen.

Looks like a landlord special

how old is the house?

is it possible that the meter used to be in a sensible position and the kitchen was crammed round it?

an L-shaped corner unit could have given you a worktop above and a door in front of the meter.

When we bought this place, to get to ours here you had to empty a kitchen cupboard, take the shelves and back out, crawl behind it and take a hard right into the corner of the kitchen, and there it was. Right bang next to the electricity meter, consumer unit, and water main. 😬Totally bonkers- especially as there was no gas cooker or anything, the pipe just went the length of the kitchen six inches out from the wall just under the kitchen units completely exposed and unsupported with the cupboards practically resting on it, back outside, and then back in again to the boiler. We asked for a quote to have it moved outside to a safer place (where it came back in again) and we expected this to be quite expensive as it needed a trench digging. Cadent took one look at the setup and moved it p.d.q. without charge. Did an excellent job too.

The house is old, and what you’ve said about the layout makes total sense. The range cooker seems too big and oddly positioned for the size of the kitchen so there may have been some rejigging of units to accommodate it.

Update! When Cadent came to look at it, they identified a safety issue (due to an extension having been built over the pipe to the meter) and so they made it all safe for just the lowest charge for a meter move. It was a LOT of work for them, but they seem to have done a great job.
