If you left Stoke Newington, where did you go?

Currently live in Stoke Newington and love it and our kids are happy in school. But we can’t afford anything bigger than our small 2-bed flat and a few things have happened on our street that make me wonder why I’m paying so much money to live somewhere tiny!

The areas we can afford in London don’t feel quite right so now I’m wondering where we would go if we left. (Budget about £875k)

So if you lived in Stokey and loved it, where did you go? And are you happy there?

Not quite sure if you can move anywhere or want somewhere in greater London

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/05/2022 09:43

As far as I can see people move to Walthamstow. One friend moved to Chingford, but I think that has been too much of an adjustment.

If you are looking for good secondary schools though, maybe Alexandra park or Finchley? You wouldn't get a house but there are some very good 3 bed flats.

Agree. Everyone I know who once lived in Stoke Newington now seems to live in Walthamstow.

Sorry I meant - left London!

Ah, can't help you there!

Places with a Stokey vibe:

Clifton (Bristol)
Lewes
Frome
Hebden Bridge

All places with lots going on and plenty of creative, relaxed liberal-leftie types. Hebden Bridge in particular is lovely and in the middle of stunning countryside.

Wheretonow1 · 17/05/2022 10:02

Oh wow it looks great!

I am surprised by the inclusion of Clifton. It always been super expensive in a lawyer/architect sort of way. Southville may appeal more.

confusedandisolating · 17/05/2022 10:20

Yeah, agree with Bristol but not Clifton. Maybe somewhere like Bishopston?

NightmareSlashDelightful · 17/05/2022 10:23

A bit extreme but one of my Stokey mates moved to Glasgow (West End) about three years ago. Loves it.

MrsOnions0 · 17/05/2022 10:24

We moved from Stokie, last summer to Hitchin. Love it. Fantastic Nursery/Schools. Independent/High St Shops. Close to A1/M1. Lots of greenery/parks on doorstep

For us we needed to stay close to London due to adhoc commute- 25 min train to Finsbury Park

BlanketsBanned · 17/05/2022 10:30

If you want to stay in London I would look at Finchley, Mill Hill and Barnet.

Wow - Hitchin is a pleasant place but surely it is the Anti-Stoke Newington in many ways!

I was going to say Hebden Bridge but I went there on holiday and didn't really get the hype. People seem to love it though. There's a lot of lesbians that live there and the only person I know who lived in Stoke Newington was my ex girlfriend so maybe there's something in it?!

Maybe I'm out of date- when I was there it was all beautiful pastel-coloured terraces and people eating complicated lentils.

Lots of lawyers and architects in Stokey though! 😀

Howeverdoyouneedme · 17/05/2022 11:33

I live in Walthamstow and loads of people come from Stokey, however some of them move on and here’s the list:

Stroud (x3)
Lewes (x2)
Bristol
Hassocks
Totnes

I would say there’s a definite vibe in all these places.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/05/2022 11:39

I think you would like Frome or Oldfield park in Bath - my friend bought a lovely 4 bed terrace in Oldfield park for £485,000 - it's quite studenty but only 1/2 mile out central Bath - it's also on good trainline to London. Gloucester Rd area in Bristol might suit too - although in all honesty I personally prefer Bath to Bristol

In or out of London OP?

Mushroo · 17/05/2022 11:52

If out of London look at Chorlton / Didsbury in south Manchester.

very safe, good schools but still feels quite ‘city’ with lots of great restaurants etc. Chorlton probably more similar to Stoke N.

Fluffruff · 17/05/2022 13:13

Do you want to move out of London OP? If not look at leyton and Leytonstone, you’ll get a big four bed there for 875.

Firecat84 · 17/05/2022 14:19

Fiveways in Brighton! I loved Stokey but here is pretty much the same and you can get a nice house for your budget. Plus really easy to get back to London.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 17/05/2022 14:27

Hebden is really over rated in my book (I’m live close enough to it)
insanely expensive for the wider area
Massive flood risk
Every nice summer weekend ever is ruined by how insanely busy the roads are and stupidly inconsiderate parking

if you want the north and that kind of vibe I’d say Chorlton in Manchester

YY to Chorlton, I used to live there. Great place.

Margate / Broadstairs / Ramsgate (as all still commutable back to London)

Glasgow
