How to get toilet seat with hidden fixings off to tighten it?

I have a D shaped toilet seat, the fixings underneath are hidden and I can't access them as the cistern is built around them.

I've got the toilet seat off, it clicked off with a button. The silver fittings in the photo are loose and simply swivel around and around.

I was under impression that I should be able to pop these fittings off and get to screws underneath to tighten them back to the toilet but I can't get anything to pop off. It looks like there's a black rubber bit under them but the whole solver part is screwed on. Any ideas anyone 😬?

Google it there are YouTube videos

Those chrome discs should pop off, they are just covers. Then you should be able to get to the mechanisms underneath

What @Tinkletwat said believe me I spent the best part of week figuring this out

I've been watching you tube videos and even got the instructions but the silver tops will not pop off for love nor money. I've had to put the seat back for now as the dcs are back from school. Will try again Friday 🤞.

agreed to silver bits should just pop off. Add a bit of WD40 to help them along?

Last time I had to do this, ended angle grinding the old fittings off as they were so corroded.

yours look nice and shiny, so fingers crossed it will be easy.

Tinkletwat · 16/05/2022 16:14

Try to get between the chrome and the black plastic, the black bits should stay on for the moment, they have the spikes that the seat clicks into as you've discovered. No idea what the proper terminology for all this stuff is! WD 40 is a good shout as per pp.

megletthesecond · 16/05/2022 16:16

Ooo, I do have some WD40. I'll try that.

It's been on for six years so I hope it's not corroded underneath.

have a look from underneath. there may be fixing nuts.

I just did this recently - I managed to prise them off with a flat edge screwdriver.
