Putting locks on glass door cabinets eg IKEA Billy

Does anyone know how to put locks onto glass doors of cabinets, please? One us a 1970s Parker Knoll one and the other is IKEA Billy book case with glass doors on. They would have to look nice on the cabinets, ideally. Is there a lockable unit you can buy that you can fix on?
Thank you in advance.

Oh they have a frame… maybe not then!

1970s glass doors to cabinets. Both the photos show sellotape on the handles, ignore the sellotape.

@ICannotRememberAThing thank you, but the locks need keys against adults not children!

Ah, I see the first product does lock with keys!

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo Yes, both type of cabinets need keys please.

The IKEA cabinet has framed glass doors, the other does not.

the Billy in particular would be easy to get into even with a lock eg through the back, for a determined adult.

The doors appear to be wooden frames with glass panels, so you can put a cupboard lock or camlock on the wooden part. If it has double doors you would put small bolts top and bottom of the other one

I don't know the dimensions of the wood, which determines what you can fit.

It would only be a notional lock since the door could easily be forced or the glass broken.

Thank you @PigletJohn. @BitOutOfPractice @HalfShrunkMoreToGo @ICannotRememberAThing
A notional lock on the IKEA one would suffice, then.
The other cabinet does not have frames on the doors. The doors open, not slide.

Looked at Amazon but can't find anything for the frameless glass does.

Sorry if this is drip feeding, it's hard for me, but my lodger steals. She returns from abroad this Friday. I have given her notice to quit. Yes this us another topic but fir now I need to focus in internal security!!!

i think you need to get a lockable box or cabinet and put your valuables in there, or a lock on the room door. what sort of door locks or latches do you have?

PigletJohn · 18/05/2022 15:14

if you are handy, you could fit cam locks.

they are often used on office drawers, cheap cash boxes etc

costing around £5 each, you fit them by cutting a round hole using a hole saw in an electric drill (I assume you will not be able to cut a flat-sided hole using a file and drill), pushed through from the outside, and retained with a metal nut. You will need a spiked washer on the inside of each to prevent them being twisted open.

they look fairly neat and the lip of the cylinder will hide the edges of the hole on the outside

i recommend getting them keyed alike so you only need one key that will operate all the locks.

you need to get the right size. advice here

they can also be used on kitchen cupboards and wardrobe doors, which are usually 18mm or 15mm thick.

You will struggle to find a lock for glass doors. The search term you need is “patch lock glass door” but I wouldn’t fancy doing it DIY and it won’t be cheap.

I agree with PigletJohn. I think you’d be better off locking the room.

sorry you’re going through this - how horrible for you.

Wauden · 18/05/2022 18:00

@PigletJohn Thank you. The house is 1930s but the doors don't have locks on them. I have got a carpenter to fit two mortice locks on two doors. But I still have the cabinets to fix. He hasn't had time to look into the cabinets but coming here tonight (local, knows about the situation). Will raise the cam lock suggestion.
@BitOutOfPractice. Thank you. It is difficult with the glass doors and with the lodger...

Perhaps I should bind the handles with wire, put furniture in front and hope that's a deterrent.

That would certainly show your intentions really clearly. I really feel for you. It’s a horrible position to be in in your own home. I hope they just move out without any fuss.

As she got notice …
I’d put a lock on door- easier
or move stuff from cupboard into lockable room in meantime

EmilyBolton · 18/05/2022 19:04

Have you called the police? If not, why?
if they have been arrested I believe you can evict immediately..would need solicitor advice.

Wauden · 18/05/2022 23:45

@EmilyBolton I would if lodger stole from me but I saw lodger steal from a shop, told L not to, told L to put it back, L did, then L told me "I do this with friends, it's ok, I have checked for CCTV cameras already". L told me they are an alcoholic and L is drunk every night.

We used magnetic child locks - like this - on the top and bottom of the billy doors www.clippasafe.co.uk/products/magnetic-lock-premium-range

Wauden · 19/05/2022 18:34

@DonGray. Thank you.
