Toilet in the kitchen, just why?!

This is a modern designed kitchen extension of a 1920s house. Why!? The toilet door opens onto their dining table!?

That’s just weird

Etinoxaurus · 12/05/2022 14:26

How strange! Have you seen it? Is there a picture? Maybe it’s on another level.

RandomQuest · 12/05/2022 14:26

Is it a mistake on the floor plan? Any chance the loo is actually in that cupboard behind the reception room and that’s supposed to be a kitchen island? It’s surely got to be a mistake!! I can’t believe anyone in their right mind would put a loo there.

IncompleteSenten · 12/05/2022 14:27

Weirder if it was actually onto their dining table. 😁

The middle of the kitchen is such an odd place to put it. Why not under the stairs or in one of those cupboards or something?

Don't suppose you'll share the link will you? I'd love to see how it looks.

Catnuzzle · 12/05/2022 14:27

Probably extended the back round the existing toilet. Bad plan though!

beechhues · 12/05/2022 14:29

Wow!

PineForestsAndSunshine · 12/05/2022 14:31

I’m guessing it’s to do with the location of the soil pipe from the first floor loo, although it’s hard to believe that was the best solution their architect could come up with!

onemouseplace · 12/05/2022 14:34

That has to be a mistake on the plans! Who in their right mind would put that there! Do you descend down steps under the kitchen island or something!

Barkingmadhouse · 12/05/2022 14:35

I have seen similar on a house design show recently - maybe we just don't understand design (and no i would not want a toilet there either)

FeelinSpendy · 12/05/2022 14:50

Looks like it was an outdoor loo and they built an extension but didn’t move it. I know it’s difficult to move soil pipes but would have thought there must have been a better solution.

BigFatLiar · 12/05/2022 14:55

Is it a toilet with a big pipe or with the small pipe? Maybe someone wanted a downstairs toilet and converted a cupboard.

WhatNoRaisins · 12/05/2022 14:57

I suppose it might be handy if your dinner disagrees with you but it looks rather odd.

onemouseplace · 12/05/2022 14:57

It's ok though - you have a lovely view of the garden while you're on the loo if you leave the toilet door open.

nearlyspringyay · 12/05/2022 15:00

Having surveyed a rather famous couple's house for divorce, some people are odd. The house I surveyed had no internal brick walls, the toilet was behind glass bricks with no doors. There were no internal not glass walls.

This was the floorplan of the house we used to live in. The only viable place for the dining table was against the empty kitchen wall. So we basically used the downstairs loo as a big storage cupboard for spare dining chairs, the tent, the heated airer got shoved in there in summer, mop & bucket etc. Big stuff we don't want too often or don't want out on display. I think we used it more during the last couple of weeks as we were packing up to leave than we had in the previous decade, as we'd already moved the dining table & most of the furniture to storage.

To add insult to injury, the upstairs bathroom was carpeted. And the front porch. Confused IDK what the LL was thinking when they did that...

@FeelinSpendy...you're right and this isn't uncommon, I remember when I was house hunting some years ago being shown round a newly refurbished 30s built house, rather than demolish the outside toilet at the back, a few feet from the kitchen they'd put a 'roof' of corrugated plastic from the kitchen door to the toilet door ??

If it was an oldish house I suspect that that was once the pantry, days pre fridges.

2022sucksalready · 12/05/2022 15:14

Totally missing the point, but wouldn’t you have the dining table behind the toilet and some nice seating in front to sit and relax by the big patio doors a bit like a family room?

Miscarriagesucks2020 · 12/05/2022 15:34

I don’t want to post link for fear of it being recognised by owner (plus we are serious about bidding on it and don’t want any competition - but we’d only bid if we can remove that loo…)! It’s most definitely there in the kitchen.

IncompleteSenten · 12/05/2022 15:36

I think the owner will recognise it from the floor plan 😁

Miscarriagesucks2020 · 12/05/2022 15:38

I’ve added a photo of the living / dining / kitchen which conveniently has the loo door shutz

sorry I think the door opens onto the sofa, the dining table is to the left of the loo 😂 and the kitchen on the right.

Maybe it’s haunted by river spirits, and if you move it, they’ll wreak terrible revenge.

I agree. That's the only sensible conclusion.

SomethigWentBang · 12/05/2022 15:46

It makes sense if you're a place short at the table.
