I have horrible taste: help me choose a bathroom suite!

I've currently got a delightful beige 80s bathroom suite (complete with orange carpeting up the side of the bath!) and I'm desperate to swap it out but can't find any combination of bath/sink/shower that doesn't look awful the second I put it all together. The house is Victorian so would really like something that looks relatively in keeping with the period features without looking tacky and awful, or looking dated within a few years. Please make some suggestions!

Depends how big your bathroom is but I'd be searching for 'traditional' bathrooms like this www.ukbathrooms.com/bathroom-basins/traditional-bathroom-basin/

Try looking on Pinterest at Victorian bathrooms, loads of ideas there

Simple is best. White, clean lines. Chrome taps.

As to whether you go for a traditionally victorian / edwardian style like pp had suggested or for something more contemporary, it really doesn't matter as long as you keep it simple.

I'd suggest it probably depends how much you're emphasising victorian features in the rest of your home. If you're deliberately emphasising them, then a victorian style would blend nicely but otherwise a simple contemporary look would probably work best.

Why do you think you’ve got horrible taste @SquashMinus

I’d be interested to see what you class as a nice bathroom 🤔 can you google some and show us something you like?

DasAlteLeid · 10/05/2022 15:19

I’ve picked three different style bathrooms off google, do any of these speak to you 😆

PS this is interesting to me as I’m also remodelling a bathroom at present, I’m not just unhealthily invested in your choice 😅

meloncolic · 10/05/2022 15:22

Ooh I’m joining in as I started a thread yesterday and am in a similar position. I doubt you have horrible taste, but it does all feel like an overwhelming decision doesn’t it!

meloncolic · 10/05/2022 15:23

If it’s helpful to you, I started a Instagram account JUST to follow designers, some of the USA ones have lovely clean taste.

you can follow all the U.K. bathroom designers as well and soon the algorithms will OVERWHELM you with bathroom things which is actually quite helpful.

White, clean lines - something like the widely available Spanish Roca brand - Roca / Giralda toilet for example,

a large wall hung basin, make it a feature. pedestal basins take up space, wall hung looks less cluttered/more spacious.

Invest more in your fittings - as you will live with them for a long time - choose something that you really like.

Easy to change your colour scheme just with cheaper accessories later.

How exciting! I love looking on Pinterest for ideas. I've got a folder set up and over a few weeks it's become obvious which style I prefer.
I wouldn't go too traditional, but something like @DasAlteLeid 's second pic is pretty timeless

DasAlteLeid · 10/05/2022 18:14

That’s so interesting to me @Gazelda as it’s my least favourite of the three, and I love bathroom one! This is why I asked OP why she thinks she has bad taste, most people just have their own taste, which is obviously subjective!

One thing that always surprises me with British bathrooms is the lack of storage. Why? Where do you all put fresh towels, 9 rolls of loo paper, boxes of tissues, make up, cleaning products, spare shampoo bottles, nail products, medicines, laundry baskets, etc? I assume we all need loads of storage in bathrooms. Am I wrong?

Pedestal sinks are from a bygone age when people only washed once a week and used a single bar of soap for everything. Vanities with drawers and cupboards are the way to go.

RewildingAmbridge · 10/05/2022 22:54

@Yellownotblue I just have another storage unit in the bathroom...
We have an Edwardian semi so the bathroom fittings would look odd if modern and built in, we have traditional fittings/tiles/radiator and something similar to this

My house is Victorian and I was torn whether to go traditional or more contemporary. Like a PP says though, storage was a big thing and the more traditional ones didn’t really offer that. I went for a more modern look but with large metro wall tiles and patterned floor tiles which give a nod to the period of the house. This is my bathroom, the wall tiles aren’t as dark in real life as in the photo

@RewildingAmbridge very nice! I like the combination of closed cupboard space and display shelves.

We had bathroom done recently (house was built 1901) and kept the 25year old cast iron roll top bath as I love it. I just painted the outside copper.
The rest of the bathroom I kept fairly plain with limed oak flooring and Dulux Timeless on the walls. No tiles as bath is free standing and we have a family shower room.
went modern with the radiator and I really like the contrast.

Top tip… lie down in the bath before you buy. The rake of some baths is really weird!
