Someone please explain shower choosing to me!

Absolutely bewildered by choice of showers on offer, and stuck between either proper local bathroom suppliers who keep trying to upsell me and online retailers who have overwhelming options or don't deliver to NI.

I am renovating a 1920s house. I am doing large family bathroom and large en suite (I have never had space to have large bathrooms before, but don't worry there are plenty problems elsewhere in the house.)

I am saving sinks from existing bathrooms, buying new toilets, know what I want from a bath, but the showers overwhelm me.

It's all quite traditional really, and I know I want big showers since I have the space, am having fancy exposed taps since I saw them in a hotel I alwasy stay at for work and they seem nice and very functional.

CONFUSED BY THE BIT ON THE FLOOR AND THE GLASS BIT.

walk in? enclosed? panels?

HIT ME WITH ALL YOUR SHOWER KNOWLEDGE.

And don’t forget the extractor fan! Will help to minimise condensation problems.

PLEASE do tell me all about your shower panels. Part of me is tempted to do tongue and groove on the walls outside so I might be doing something totally different in the shower anyway.

It's quite funny, the style over here is currently so MARBLE AND GOLD that I think it's almost pushing me away from the mega luxe anyway.

I am really feeling it for designers Luke Edward Hall and Beata Heuman - their colours are a bit mad but their whole look is a bit 'I made this bit in Home Ec and found the other part in the attic and now I will charge you ££££ for it'. Sort of easier to recreate yourself.

Very good point, I think we def have this but important to put on the list to check!

The renovation is such a big job (what with the house having been due to be demolished and everything) that a really reputable building company is contracting via a JCT to do it all. The downside is that this is currently so expensive that I can't afford to get a designer bathroom service or anything like that. I also like the current layout of the bathrooms and am confident about eveyrthing apart from showers! And tiles. God the amount of tiles I have looked at.

With that shower unit you picked, you have to reach through the area the water comes down to turn the shower on, thus requiring quick hands or getting cold water splashed on you when you turn it on.

We designed ours to have the control on the wall opposite the shower and beside where the (shower) door opens to avoid that.

I always view bathroom items from an ease of cleaning and minimal chance for mold to get growing point of view.
I also found that the show rooms etc are just the latest fashion of bathrooms which I knew I didn't want. I had to root around to find what I wanted.
I don't rate the sink cupboard combos. I find water damages the cupboard in some way.

Also! I personally cannot stand lying in a bath with the toilet by my head. So consider layout!

meloncolic · 09/05/2022 14:52

I like the shower unit so much that I'm okay with that I think.

Yes good point re the bath and toilet placement. Will have a look at it today when I pop in.

I have also backed away from the beautiful freestanding ones, not only because they're so expensive, but also dusty surely to clean under and two local friends have said they are so hard to fill and keep warm here (what with it always being cool). Also the cost of filling them! Getting a much smaller bath with panels.

Yes, I agree re the showrooms I just find they aren't really listening.

What do you think of this enclosure?

I think I've seen that design of shower before, variations sold under various brand names. I still think the aqualisa is better.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 09/05/2022 19:28

I love terrazzo too but I think these are more subtle and less likely to date:

Yes, I love that kind too but it’s three times as expensive and has to be sealed - very like encaustic. Because it’s so damp here I really want porcelain/ceramic as better suited to climate.

i have read some horror stories of bathroom tile sealing being a nightmare!

Sorry, do you mean the shower and enclosure or the shower itself @PigletJohn ?
