Combi boiler and Hive hot water help

Looking for some help/wisdom please!

We recently moved into a house with a Combi boiler. It has a Hive system for controlling the heating. In Winter the heating would come on morning and afternoon and there'd be a good supply of hot water for showers in the morning or evening for the family.

In between these times if we ran a hot tap the Combi boiler would kick in and the water would heat up (eg for hand washing or doing washing up)

Now the weather is warm the heating isn't coming on the Combi boiler will still heat water if taps are turned on bit showers will run hot then cold then hot then cold.

Note there's no other hot water tank or anything.

How are we supposed to control having enough hot water if the heating is not coming on? Is there something I'm missing or is there an issue here? I'm not used to either Combi boilers or Hive systems!

A combi heats water on demand so you will always have hot water. The hive will be used just to control the heating

Combo boilers will work whether the heating is on or not because there is no tank. The hive system is just a thermostat and app.

Sometimes the water pressure is too much for the boiler so try turning the shower down

Checked the water pressure in the ch system? If it's low it can stop the hw working.

Thanks all. First two responses are kind of what I thought - that the Combi boiler should just heat the water irrespective of the heating. Just confused that it seemed to be hot through a shower when the heating was on but when hearing's not been on it seems to struggle to keep up. Will get the system all checked out I think. Not sure when it was last serviced (have all the paperwork from previous owners somewhere!)

Be aware though that a combi I think can only cope with one thing at once. So if you are in the shower and someone runs the tap to wash up or whatever it will affect the water in the shower. I don’t know the technical stuff behind it but that is what I have found in the past. I don’t know if that is the issue?

We’ve just had a Hive fitted, I know when you move house the previous owners are supposed to take the Wi-Fi unit thingy with them and you will need to get one yourself to control the system using the App. British Gas fit/own them so you could call them for help. Also…

We have a combi, you can turn the hot water up on them easily enough, just Google your model. I did ours from YouTube.

It may be worth investing in a service though, checking you have the full Hive set up and getting the service engineer to show you how to use the App and turn up the hot water, then you’re all good for the next year.

Have you looked at the combi itself OP?
there should be separate controls for how hot you’d like the water and how hot the radiators

Whats the boiler rating ?
where the previous owners a big family, a couple, something else?
how many baths and showers are in the house?
the boiler should be rated to cope with an expected demand based on the owners requirements at the time.
