So depressing

I've looked at 10 properties so far, On paper perfect, modern houses as I'm done with money pits, but oh so depressing, house I looked at today was absolutely filthy and stank, hadn't been decorated ever by the looks of it, smelt like stinky armpits and mince and all the carpets were totally worn out and full of holes.
Everything needs replacing kitchen and all the bathrooms. Garden a hellhole you'd need a tractor to sort it out.
And they want top dollar for these places.
A house is your biggest ever investment so why not treat it like the investment it is. I think todays palace would have gone for £25,000 more had it been neat and tidy.
I've painted my whole house ready for sale, had all the carpets cleaned, the oven cleaned, the garden is immaculate. Yet nothing I have viewed is suitable for moving into.
Why???

Because they know that they'll sell regardless of condition in this mad market. The place I viewed today stank of fags and was dark and depressing but already had several offers. 🤷

It's a sellers' market at the moment, just the way it is.

Maybe the couple were divorcing and neither side wanted to pay for more carpets or do any work that would benefit the other half. Maybe someone died and the one left found everything too overwhelming to deal with. Maybe they lost their jobs and sank into deep depressions. Only they knows. If it would be valued at £25k more but would only take £10k to fix then buy it, get that profit.

I’m selling at the moment. My friends tell me I’m nuts, because I clean before every viewing and tell me it’s pointless but I disagree. We have a toddler and a cat, both relatively clean but I still scrub scrub. Because no matter if it is a sellers market, I’m also looking to buy and can’t understand why you’d not make an effort. I don’t want to smell strange smells when I walk into a house I’m considering buying so expect others to not either. I stress enough over the packing boxes in the rooms, which I can’t do much about!!

i viewed a property and the whole family was in (I think it’s better to not view a house with owners there) and the house smelt of cooking as the family was cooking.. the place hadn’t been cleaned at all either..🤦🏻‍♀️

Crazy!!

It’s crazy at the moment. We viewed one place that was filthy and stunk of dog so bad that I had to leave to get some fresh air 🤢 they had stuff piled up everywhere and hadn’t bothered to tidy. It still sold in about a week! I have a toddler and presented an immaculate house for every single viewing, my pride would never allow strangers into my house and it not be at least clean and tidy!

Same. Glad it’s not for nothing! Admittedly I’m a bit of a neat and clean freak anyway but I just don’t get why you’d want people to view a house that has your belongings strewn everywhere or smells like last nights dinner! Feels wrong and weirdly disrespectful when someone’s bothered to travel to view your home they potentially want to buy.

I'm viewing at the moment too and I really appreciate it when the vendor has gone to the trouble of tidying up and doing minor repairs. I suppose I assume that, if they're house proud, there probably aren't lots of hidden jobs that they couldn't be arsed to sort. I've offered and lost out three times, but always houses that were obviously prepared for market. Messy, unclean houses put me off - assume they're lazy and would be a pain to deal with, and that they wouldn't keep on top of the house while waiting to complete.

Didn’t think of it that way re: hidden jobs! But do think it reflects on what state the house would be in when you move in.

I remember when I moved out of a flat I’d sold to buy this house, I’d cleaned it top to bottom a couple of days before, on the last day I was cleaning where I could see dust on skirting behind sofa I’d missed, movers were telling me off but all i could think of was how awful it would be to move in all excited and find yourself having to clean up first thing! Sometimes the little things have a huge impact.

Must admit I think the same re: what you get on the day you exchange.. buying this house I asked for a small clause to be inserted that stated the house must be in a reasonable state and all belongings must be removed unless otherwise agreed. And it was relatively empty when I bought it but .. you just don’t know..

We rent houses and my house is always mint when they show potential tenants around- as someone else said my pride likes people to say 'oh this is lovely' !! Sadly we've viewed some right crapholes that looked great on pictures I can only presume were taken years ago and with different tenants-- some people really don't seem to give a shit whether buying or renting

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/05/2022 22:16

The last house I bought - again modern, well it looked ok in the viewing, I guess I didn't look too closely just got a general idea and he had very expensive furniture.
When I moved in it stank of ingrained fags and was so filthy it took me 3 months to clean.
The plug sockets and light fittings you couldn't even get the filth off with bleach so I had to change all of them and replace with new ones.
The oven had to be professionally cleaned and the cleaner almost gave up. The owner had been a single middle aged man.
The toilet, OMG!!! Seat went to the dump and it took a whole bottle of bleach, the flooring was so ingrained with urine I had to pull it up and it was rotten.
I'm now moving and I just cannot bear doing this again.

I just think some people live like pigs. I’d rather not deal with them. The photos would have shown you the house wasn’t great. I get, though, that there might not be many to choose from.
