Will it get any sun?

Is it completely true north? Often if it is slightly off you'll get a bit of morning or pm/Eve sun and some interest.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/05/2022 18:46

Depends how bit of is, and how tall the house is! Sorry, not helpful, I know, but it's true. Ours gets plenty but it's bigger than average (for a city house, anyway).

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 06/05/2022 18:46

*How big it is, I mean.

beechhues · 06/05/2022 18:47

That's true a lot of factors. You can tell by the kind of plants in the garden already and quality of the grass - if it really gets little sun it'll have concrete, slabs or astroturf or the glass will either look ropey or be new turf!

Marcipex · 06/05/2022 18:47

Depends on what is around it. It might get morning or evening sun.
and a longer garden should have at least part of it out of the shadow of the house.

gardenwar · 06/05/2022 18:47

Like other have said, depends of size of garden and where neighbouring houses are.

custardbear · 06/05/2022 18:48

Pictures please

... my IL's have a north facing garden but lots of the garden is not overlooked and big space so it does get plenty of sun in parts, they've just worked their garden around that

Ours does, but we are rural surrounded by fields on 3 sides and only 1 neighbour and their house isn’t near. But we also have a private front garden that is full South so we can choose to follow the sun.
We did reposition a shed as it caused a big shadow in an area that was good to sit, now it’s much better.

We are moving to a new house soon which also has a North back garden but it’s banked up, higher than the houses and very sunny, but it too has a large front garden too so we still get best of both.

ElephantandGrasshopper · 06/05/2022 18:56

Ours gets morning and evening sun, plus a sliver along the back wall all day in summer.

muddyford · 06/05/2022 18:57

Ours does as it's open outlook to the north and west and neighbour the other side has the house set back from ours. So from March to September it's pretty sunny all day.

Applebeee · 06/05/2022 19:01

It's a terrace in south manchester.

North west facing.

It's a mid terrace and not overlooked at the back.

You should get Sun from the east over the other gardens and from the west in the evening. When the Sun is high in the summer it might shine over the roof down the garden. In the winter. Probably not.

WindowWanker · 06/05/2022 19:09

My last house was a terrace with small north facing back garden. Winter pretty much no sun. Summer - sun hit the back of the house in the morning and then had sun for over half the garden until about 7pm. You need to position any patio/seating area at the end of the garden.

summerdrinks · 06/05/2022 19:20

Depends on the size of garden. Ours is north facing but big so we get sun from morning right through to the evening but also have spots of shade too. Works for us as the DDog always has somewhere to lay in the shade.
My ILs refused to look at any NF gardens when they moved house and told us we'd never get sun in our garden. We regularly laugh whilst sitting in the sun saying 'yeah, definitely no sun in this NF garden!' Purely depends on the size of garden.

This is what I thought. From the East in the morning and from the west in the afternoon.

There's a website that you can look up to see the sun calculations. As others have said, it depends on the size of the house/garden and if you have lots of close neighbouring houses etc.
My friends have a north facing garden but it's a bungalow with no one behind them so they get sun at the end of their garden.
Look at - suncalc.net

My NW (NWW maybe?) garden is fabulous, it is lovely, sheltered & sunny.

stuntbubbles · 07/05/2022 08:36

Ours is true north facing, very narrow – 2m wide at its narrowest spot! – with 6ft fences all round, mid-terrace backing on to another terrace. In other words, you’d think not a chance of sun! But every area of the garden gets some sun at some point – at the back it’s a sun trap and that’s where my grape vine and roses are. Closer to the house it’s definitely not enough sun for most roses or cottage garden plants – my alliums take longer than in other gardens to grow, and don’t last as long, for instance. The lavender close to the house is scrappy; the stuff at the back is thriving. But in the middle of the day in summer the whole garden is sunny and alive with bees and butterflies, and we need the parasol over the picnic bench by the house.

In winter, however, it’s a fucking bog.

FragileConsequence · 07/05/2022 13:05

Ours is north west. We get a fair amount of sun April-Oct then it's pretty dark the rest of the year. But I don't mind so much as it's so nice in summer. Our garden is small but wide. We sometimes get some sun in the morning from a side gate if it's left open, then the rest of the garden slowly gets some over the course of the day. The only bit that doesn't is the left-hand side by the house, but it's patio there.

SwayingInTime · 07/05/2022 13:38

I have lived in a tiny north west facing terrace in SM and it was quite the sun trap in parts, over my 6pm for most of the year though but still more usable than the yards opposite which needed parasols/ shades etc if it was nice enough to sit out.

MindBodyChocolate · 07/05/2022 13:42

I’m currently sitting in our north facing back garden in full sunshine and complaining how hot it is 🤣 it depends entirely on your surroundings and where they will block the sun. We are very overlooked by houses and in winter there’s not a lot of sun but spring and summer all areas get sun. I really like our garden and don’t understand the obsession with south facing.

Applebeee · 07/05/2022 13:43

Im viewing the house later today. Unfortunately the sun has gone in now 🙃.
