Experiences please if so. What was the set up of the house, what did you do, and was it worth it?

What is de-linking?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/05/2022 12:46

What does it mean?

WildOnce · 01/05/2022 12:51

Sorry - de linked a linked- detached!

Really intrigued by this.

why would you go to all the expense of doing this?

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/05/2022 12:55

We're linked detached, linked to next door by their garage and ours. We did think about taking the garage down and putting it at the back of the back garden. Would have given us a long drive. We didn't bother in the end. We hear nothing from next door.

If next door ever convert their garage, I would seriously think about doing it.

WildOnce · 01/05/2022 13:01

@HelpMeGetThrough we are buying a house with linked garages and may want to
convert our garage at some point but then we run the risk of next door doing the same and becoming effectively a semi. Or just pissing them off because they may wish to do the same but won’t because of that ‘risk’.

@SinaraSmith the above it the only scenario where I would do this in case an extension/conversion devalued the house by making it a semi detached.

@WildOnce this would very much be our concern too. We considered here converting the garage to an office, but the considered if next door did the same, we'd effectively be end of terrace, as next door is a semi.

For us to take the garage down, wouldn't be too bad. Basically just the roof, back wall and front. We'd have to move the heating boiler into the house and make good the wall on next doors garage, but it would be worth it if they converted their garage.

I agree - what on earth is the benefit?

The only way to do it is to make your home or garage smaller. Why would you spend money doing that?

Is there a big difference between value of a linked detached and a semi? I am looking to move myself and in this area there’s a negotiable difference.

the big jump is when you go to detached. Between semi and linked, not much difference at all. That’s why I am confused.

SinaraSmith · 01/05/2022 13:43

Sorry forgot to say that detached that are extremely close to the neighbours don’t have a big price jump either. It’s the detached with a decent amount of space between them that do.

Even if that space is just big enough to fit a person down. That would mean reducing your house size by a few feet.

FabulousFlowerpots · 01/05/2022 13:53

I don't see the point in this at all. Add space, add value. Both me & my neighbour built into our garages.

There is where I am. 3 bed semi £320k, 3 bed link detected £380k.

WallaceinAnderland · 01/05/2022 14:45

It would be great for your neighbour. They would get the detached house with none of the expense.
