if your survey (highest level) misses something major when buying a house - who is liable? Can you claim back from surveyor or can you claim on house insurance?

if your insurance covers legal aid, contact them.

You claim on the surveyors insurance.

A house locally sold and was in a very bad state of repair, which was obvious
from looking at it.

The surveyor missed something out, and the new owners got a significant payout. Enough to foot a majority of the repairs they’d already budgeted for.

Surveyor's insurance (parents' house had several issues the surveyor missed - it was a bit of a faff claiming etc but they got a suitable payout in the end).

Ah ok! Thankyou! that’s good to know! We’ve never had surveys as only purchased new builds!

I meant if your insurance covers legal aid, get them to do the work with the surveyor's insurer.
