There's a leak on kitchen ceiling see photo the bathroom is above the kitchen.
What would be causing this??
Will this be really expensive to fix??
Should I claim on insurance???

You need to find out what's causing the leak
Have you checked under the bath/shower?

LIZS · 30/04/2022 22:39

Bath overflow, poor sealant, dripping pipework under bath/shower/sink, heating pipe leak . What flooring is in the bathroom?

LIZS · 30/04/2022 22:40

Insurance will probably only cover the ceiling not the source of the leak

purpleme12 · 30/04/2022 23:33

I have no idea where it's coming from.
It's this floor.
Excuse the dirty floor

Call a plumber, after the bank holiday.

Antarcticant · 01/05/2022 00:31

When we had a leak like that, it was the shower tray (standalone shower). If possible, try to work out where it's coming from by a process of elimination, i.e. avoid using the various water sources in the bathroom one by one and see if it stops.

purpleme12 · 01/05/2022 00:50

We don't have a stand alone shower
Just a bath with a shower over the top.
It's at the wrong end to be the sink
So I guess it's toilet or bath?

No idea how much these things cost worried now

Call out charge recently here was £80. Some insurers may have trades to call out - Directline does I think. Water will collect at lowest/weakest point so it can travel. Have you taken bath panel off?

filka · 01/05/2022 08:06

I think the bath is more likely because if it's the sink or toilet you should be able to see it. Is it possible that water is spraying outside the bath when you take a shower? Might not be the plumbing at all. Photo is really unclear!

Can you take off the bath panel to look? Sometimes water doesn't just drip down, it runs along the floor until it finds a crack, then drips down. Then it can do the same on the plasterboard of the ceiling below.

We’ve had something similar, couldn’t work out where it was coming from, took bath panel off , laid on floor with a headtorch on whilst DH showered and lo and behold water was coming in around the bath tap seals, was surprised at how much was actually coming in.

Replaced the taps as I didn’t like them although could have just resealed them and once it had dried out just sanded the ceiling where there was some bubbling and painted over with some stain sealer paint then regular emulsion so cost was minimal and didn’t need a plumber.

My child had a shower yesterday which is when I noticed this.
There's been no water overnight it's dried up now.
We'll have to see if a bath sets it off.

No haven't taken off the bath panel I guess that's the next thing to do

Ah ok so it's possible it might not be too serious!

This happened to me. I took the bath panel off and felt the pipes until I found the leak. A plumber sorted it very easily and I repainted the ceiling.

purpleme12 · 01/05/2022 13:59

There was no water come through when we had a bath earlier

LIZS · 01/05/2022 14:20

Run the shower and see if spray from the tiles seeps through?

dementedpixie · 01/05/2022 14:24

It was the sealant round our bath that had come away and water was running down the wall behind the bath and causing marks on the ceiling below. We did have to take the side off the bath to see where the water was running from

thinkfast · 01/05/2022 23:00

Sounds like it might be the sealant round the bath if the leak shows just after showering, and you have an over shower bath. That's not usually an expensive fix.
