Long thin cupboard. Any ideas?

Any ideas for a good way to use this under stairs cupboard which comes off our kitchen? It's only 80cm wide, but goes back 3m. It also goes down a couple of steps.
We cannot easily access it from our hallway (otherwise we would knock through for a hallway cupboard).
It would be useful for hoover/ironing board/mop etc, but it'll be really awkward to access anything due to its narrowness.
I though maybe really shallow shelving for stuff like batteries, lightbulbs, toilet rolls maybe wine?
It's cool in there, but not damp. We don't need it for food storage.
Any cool storage solutions that would help? Smile

My old understairs cupboard didn’t go down as low as yours so I had a low set of narrow shelves across the back wall and two higher ones down the side. Stuff at the back were the things you didn’t need to use very often. The hoover, brooms, ironing board etc would stand in the clear space and I had hooks on the wall for the iron, dustpan and brush, carrier bag storage from IKEA, and one for dusters. The ladders stood in there too. Might not work for you with all the electrics on the wall though.

Things I kept on the shelves were cleaning products, recycling, laundry baskets, buckets, windscreen wash fluid, wellingtons. Writing this, I realise it was what I have in my utility room now so it’s likely that if you create the right type of storage, you will find things to put in there 😀 30cm wide shelves would give you 50cm walkway. Not a massive amount but you could probably squeeze in there - but I’d probably want to see if it were possible to put a shallow cupboard over the electrics.

Alternatively, you could get a joiner to create a bespoke cupboard with drawers of varying depths all along the back wall.

Shoe cupboard? I’d throw all the excess shoes bags coats etc in there hidden out of sight.

Where does it back onto?

My Grandad used to brew beer in a cupboard like that Grin

Just seeing it, reminded me!

Oooh a lovely space, but it's giving me the heebie jeebies, op!

Other than a panic room 😆, I think I'd put some wide shelves across the back slopey bit and use it for stuff not needed often - decorating items etc. Then shelve the left with narrow shelves for smaller items and keep the rest for hoover, ironing board etc and hooks high up to hang things in bags. I'd look a trying to box in the electrics too if possible.

With that sloping ceiling are you sure you don't have a boarded off cellar, or is it under your stairs?

Thingsthatgo · 30/04/2022 11:22

Fairly sure we don't have a cellar... although nothing we surprise me in this house. My husband has created a Narnia space where one of the wardrobes in the loft bedroom has a secret door at the back leading onto a small attic space!
Thanks for the good ideas... I think hooks would work well.

I think I’d do shelving at the rear and then hooks on the left hand side. I’d try to keep as much off the floor as possible just to make sure you can access the shelves at the rear.

I’ve just these type of holders for mops and the like and they’re excellent. I’ve got them on the inside of a cupboard door and various other places.
