Ensuite with no bath or shower?

Bathroom2022 · 30/04/2022 06:35

I think I've come up with a really good idea but I'm not sure!

We have 3 bathrooms: 2 ensuites and family bathroom. All are old/mouldy/not fit for purpose and we are skint.

In our ensuite the shower cubicle is a single so you just have to stand there, can't move etc, it's also completely mouldy. I am an early riser so shower then and it disturbs dh (I then do hair and makeup in our bedroom), he comes to bed late to shower and that disturbs me. The plan was to take some of our bedroom to have a bigger shower in the ensuite and replace whole ensuite.

Anyway I was thinking of just doing the family bathroom up and us showering in there so nobody is disturbed and then we only need to save for one bathroom.

In our ensuite we would have toilet, sink, and an area for me to do hair and makeup. Is this crazy for the house? Surely the best part of an ensuite is being able to nip for a wee? Would it be wrong to not have a shower in there? Any thoughts?

Sounds good, nothing worse than a tiny shower cubicle.

How many people do you have in your house and would you create a queue for showers?

Poppins2016 · 30/04/2022 06:52

To be honest, I'd say the best part of having an en suite is both being able to nip to the loo in the night and not having to traipse through the house for a shower. However, if the shower in the en suite is too small then it negates the benefits of having it. I'd probably want to replace with a larger shower, but would think carefully before borrowing space from the bedroom unless it's really possible to do without (you don't want to exchange one problem for another, for example, where to put furniture or storage).

Having said that, if having no shower in the en suite works for you, it doesn't really matter what I think!

My parents have an en-suite with just a loo and basin; the house bathroom is next to their bedroom though.

It wouldn’t put me off, the extra loo / option to quarantine someone with d&v is the primary reason for having an en-suite.

FlowerArranger · 30/04/2022 07:04

Can you turn the ensue into a wet room?

FlowerArranger · 30/04/2022 07:04

En Suite !

demotedreally · 30/04/2022 07:06

How often do you have d&v @Traumdeuter - I don't have special plans for it!

Roselilly36 · 30/04/2022 07:07

Personally, I would put in a new shower unit, when you come to resell in the future, most buyers would prefer an extra shower room, than just a wc & basin.

There are 4 of us and we have 4 toilets. The family bathroom is opposite our bedroom door. We wouldn't lose any major space in the bedroom, it would just be a small corner to get a double shower cubicle, but that all costs money! We aren't staying in the house forever, so I guess others would want a shower. It just seemed a really good solution!

If you had more money, could you make the en-suite bigger or a better layout to enable it to have a decent shower?

At this stage it sounds like the best idea would just be to focus on the family bathroom, but to consider what/someone else would do if there was more money. So I wouldn't spend money on the family bathroom if it needed to be altered to accommodate the en suite getting the space it needs.

hope that makes sense.

Bathroom2022 · 30/04/2022 08:39

I don't think I'll convince dh to lose the shower anyway.

I have a similar problem. The shower in the ensuite is tiny. When I try to re-layout it by putting the shower to end of bathroom where the window is, I was told the loo need to be by the window due to the external pipe for the loo. The bathroom is a small n narrow one.
any ideas I can explore so I can fit in a bigger shower? Now it’s slightly smaller than 700x700. We can hardly move inside

Here’s the layout

MeJane · 01/01/2023 09:17

You could get a toilet/sink combination @yocoffee

Reallybadidea · 01/01/2023 09:21

Could you move the sink so that it's opposite the toilet so you've got room to extend the shower?

goldennotyetoldie · 01/01/2023 09:47

That's an easy fix. Move the door to the ensuite to opposite the loo.then put a much wider showe cubicle in on the wall where the door used to be.

Have a sliding/pocket door so you don't lose space in either room

goldennotyetoldie · 01/01/2023 09:49

That last comment was to @yocoffee Xmas Wink

OneArepa · 01/01/2023 10:49

No need to move doors etc. Have a toilet/sink combination as @MeJane suggests, then extend the shower into the former sink space.

OR, if it’s actually practical in the real space, put the sink opposite the toilet as long as there’s enough room between.

Where is the actual waste pipe ? If it’s top right in your picture, can’t see an issue moving the toilet to bottom right. Just run a waste pipe along that wall and connect up.
Our bathroom has the main waste pipe top right going down the house.
Our toilet is bottom right and our bath runs along the window wall.
The toilet pipe is boxed in higher than it needs to be so we have a bathroom worktop over it for toothbrushes/mirror/bleach etc.

Here’s the layout

I would get a toilet/sink combo and extend the shower into the sink area. We have a small downstairs bathroom with toilet/sink combo which made room for a bath for the kids

I’d keep shower even though you have two en-suites. I’m thinking of doing mine and similarly small but no scope to move position of shower. As it was, shower was used by my dds before they left as main big bathroom only has bath in it. It was a house let to families before me (neighbours have said) so that shower in en suite has had 16 yrs of intense use. Both of have a deep clean but I’m worried will knock off value off house. I intend to downsize at some point but areas I’m looking at are more expensive than here. Decisions, decisions…
