Asbestos in artex in bathroom, covering with board

I am not knowledgable on this stuff at all so hoping for some help. We are having our bathroom redone and have artex on the ceiling. The fitter has said it will contain asbestos (is this the case with all artex)? and so he will put some board on top instead of taking it down and plastering it. Does this sound normal or is it a short cut which isn't recommended?

A plaster can plaster and paint over it, it doesnt need to be taken down. What was he suggesting he secure the plasterboard to.

Yes best not to move it if in tact. The cheaper option is skimming and plasterboard. To remove will need specialist and contained airtight space plus special disposal .

You'd need an asbestos specialist to take it down which is significantly more expensive. Yes as far as I'm aware if its anything from mid 90s or below artex will contain asbestos.

I believe intact artex is completely safe - doesn’t need removing unless it’s flaking etc. plaster and paint over.

Not all artex has asbestos in it. You can get it tested fairly cheaply.

Thanks all. I'm not sure what exactly he is going to use or do, his comments are that he will overboard the ceiling and skim which judging by your comments is normal practice so I assume this is fine

There was asbestos in my artex ceiling ( had it tested) and most plasterers won't skim it because that in itself can cause it to break and create smalls amounts of dust ( this is what I was told by a couple of plasterers that came to look)

I wanted a new light fitted and asked about boarding but because they needed to wire new lights they still would have to drill the original artex ceiling so boarding was pointless!

You should just leave it if it's intact or get a specialist to remove

My OH and I pulled down the ceilings etc in the first house we bought. I feel asbestosis is in our future
