How do I tell where my boundary is?

Neighbours are taking out a hedge from the front of the house and replacing it with a fence. Our houses are both extended up to the boundary line but with a gap of about 8/12 inches (at a guess). I have a hardstanding that ends at the line of my house but we want to pull that up and have hedge either side (so need as much space as we can to do this as there's only about a foot and then garage. How can we tell where the boundary line is? Previous planning? The little maps at land registry are too small. Fence is going up Friday.

Read this, tell your neighbour you want a boundary survey before the fence is erected. It'll be nice and clear for all future owners then too.

Shit really? That's the only way of doing it?

The fence is also going to be staggered - dropping in height from the house to the road - starting quite high and ending about 6 ft high - it's in the front of the house. Not sure if they need planning permission for this? I spoke to planning and he said only the bit that adjoins the highway has to be under 1 metre - I am not 100% sure what that means - just the fence that runs along the road? Or does that include the fence that is in between the properties?

I read recently the interpretation of that rule generally is that the first panel (1.8m) is expected to be <1m. Any after that can be 2m.
