Get a small flat price of wood or plasterboard which will fit through the hole but is about 15 cm long and tie a price of string round the middle of it. Stick it up through the hole and use the string to position it so that is covers most of the hole. Whilst holding the string to hold it in place, screw through the existing plaster into the wood at both ends to hold it in place. Screw slightly under the surface of the plaster so you can cover over the screw heads. Fill the screw holes and hole with filler. Job done.

I think you will need to use galvanised screws or something which is ok to use outside otherwise they will rust and the colour will bleed through the plaster.

Thank you so much @Geneticsbunny I will relay the information 😁

No problem. Hope it works.

Unless he is ironman, this would only happen if the plaster is faulty or has been weakened, typically by a long-term water leak.

anoldcharter · 26/04/2022 09:43

@PigletJohn he is a big strong guy but the patch is right above the bathroom and I did say that maybe we have a leak.... problem is, bathroom (we've recently bought this house) has floor to ceiling tiles so I have absolutely no idea how we would check for a leak without smashing the floor tiles through - ffs, this is just what I don't need right now :( Is there an easier way to check?

I'd be looking in to why your husband was able to stick his thumb through the ceiling first!

JamMakingWannaBe · 26/04/2022 19:40

How tall is your husband? How strong is his thumb?

PigletJohn · 26/04/2022 21:38

You can prod the ceiling with a nail, or the mighty thumb.

If it goes through, the plaster is perished.

You will have to pull it down for repair, before it falls down, and luckily this will give you access to the pipes that are (presumably) leaking.

Usually you will see the plaster bulging or hanging, and stains under a leak.

How old is the house?

anoldcharter · 26/04/2022 22:35

@JamMakingWannaBe dh is 6ft 4 and pretty strong 😁

@PigletJohn we've removed a bit more and can see the pipes, a couple look very green/blue at the connections (if that makes sense) can see the water dripping off the bend in one of the pipes but not sure where leak is, whether there or further up. Who do I need to call, plumber first? Gah....

House is 1980s

P.s. thanks for the advice, very much appreciated 😁

Buy a builders canister vac to clear up the plaster rubble, and call a plumber.

Later, you will need a plasterer

In both cases, ask for personal recommendations from people you know.

An advertising website masquerading as a recommendation site, where people pay to be listed, is not a personal reccommendation.

anoldcharter · 27/04/2022 10:38

thanks @PigletJohn I have emergency cover on my insurance so plumber coming this afternoon, its a pain but glad its happened now rather than after we had decorated and had new carpet laid.
