Salford Quays

My DH came home tonight with the news that a really good job has come up in Salford Quays, Manchester with his current firm. He is quite keen to apply. We live in a totally different area of the north at the moment. I am also attracted to Salford Quays because of the planned BBC development there (I worked for them in London pre-DDs).

If you live in or near that area, could you please let me know what it's like for families and anything else that strikes you.

Thanks in advance.

Lots of flats in SQ, not so many family houses. Very little infrastructure so don't consider living there especially if you have kids. It's more like a large work/industrial area (which includes old trafford football ground) with lots of trendy flats built around it than an area for families to live.

It does have a couple of tram stops and a main road running through the middle so easy to commute to from most areas of Manchester and surrounding areas.

Hmmm..not much by way of amenities..and as cushion says, it's very 'post-industrial'. there are MUCH nicer areas, and family friendly, that are within striking distance of SQ - Chorlton, Stretford, as egs. If given the choice, Chorlton IS tops, - well established Victorian/Edwardian houses, bit trendy. 10 mins drive to SQ but very different.

Thanks very much for the info. I shall get searching!

Beech Road, Chorlton and it's surroundings are very very nice place to live - I used to live just off Beech Road. Lovely.

sorry, one last thing, BUT a BIG ONE.

SQ is beside the Ordsall estate. It's as rough as a bears bum. SQ don't have any schools. Children will go to Ordsall schools. No-one's first choice.

I work in salford Quays and grew up not far from there. We now live in Agecroft which is nice. Prestwich is nice and on the tram links.

North Manchester is traditionally cheaper than south.

Yes, don't live in Salford Quays. It is teh worst post code for crime in the UK apparently

My DH is seriously impressed by you lovely MNers. Thanks, this will help us a great deal to make our decision (if he's offered the job, of course!

Just wanted to add that when I researched before moving up here I discovered that Trafford borough had a grammar school system with very sought after schools so worth looking there as the commute would be fine. Look at areas such as Altrincham, Timperley, Sale and Hale.

We've recently moved to Wilmslow but that may be a bit far out for you.

I researched like mad on schools/shops/general infrastructure so if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks CC,

I am really liking the look of Altrincham at the moment and had a good old sniff about on the net last night. I think that the big city might be too much of a shock for my 'market town' daughters.

Now if DH could just get that job offer...
