Black particles coming out of hot tap

Hi, I ran a bath this evening and there were several (5 or 6) pieces of black stuff in there floating around.

This has happened before a few times and I seem to remember similar happening in houses when I was a child so I still had the bath, but afterwards wondered if it was something I should mention to the landlord?

Hopefully I've attached a photo of one of the specks I scooped out of the bath and smooshed slightly with my finger.
It felt kind of oily, although it had been in hot water so maybe that isn't surprising!

A quick Google didn't help as it's telling me all sorts about hot water tank corrosion and things like that, so I was wondering if anyone knew what the black specks were and if they're something to notify the landlord of?

Thank you :)

Are you on a private water supply or mains?

Daphnedot · 17/04/2022 19:47

Is it the rubber from the tap?

I work for as a PA for a plumber. We recently had someone book in because black oily stuff was coming out of their kitchen tap.

I had visions of something like a scene out of the exorcist. It was a bit of an anticlimacs when my plumber boss told me it was just the rubber seals in the tap disintergrating and it was solved by replacing the tap.

You should let your landlord know as it will probably just get worse over time.

I don't know, so I assume mains?

Came on to ask this! Could it be the washer?
MummyJ12 · 17/04/2022 20:13

I only ask as we had something very similar happen a few years ago. We were on a private water supply and it was the micro filter from the way too old and worn out water treatment system.

If it’s mains, it could be something more simple and easier to fix. Definitely call your letting agent or landlord to investigate.
Hope it’s sorted soon!

OK thanks all, just didn't want to contact them and be a pain if it's something that's completely normal. Quite a lot been going on with the house over the last year and it's costing the landlord a small fortune I'm sure Confused
