Sanding floors

I have a typical 1930s house, but on the small side. I want to sand the floors to a room downstairs. Is this doable in a day? (Sanding only - not the clean up and varnish).

Yes definitely, if:

  • you have the right equipment
  • you don't need to take up and replace any of the boards
  • it hasn't previously been painted
  • you don't have a million carpet tacks to take out

Good luck!

Yes the sanding part is possible if you hire the right tools. But the prep is really important, any metal in the board will mangle your sander. Also important is getting rid of the dust afterwards, and protecting yourself while you’re doing it.

Also make sure you fill any gaps in the floorboards and repair or replace any broken floorboards before you start sanding. Make sure you wear a proper mask and eye protection as the dust gets everywhere.

We got someone in to do ours after having done it ourselves before. The new machines that they used (compared with the ones you hire, which haven’t changed for 20 years) are quieter, more efficient and produce no dust at all. It was worth every penny.

How much sanding do you really need to do if the floors have nothing on them at the start? Or am I missing something? Would like to do mine Smile
