Derelict House

Has anyone bought a derelict house? (Obviously people do! I mean on here! Or know someone who has?)

Currently renting, which sucks. There's a really run down derelict house a few streets away. I know it is vacant.
Does anyone know what kind of bargains can be had if I approach the council and try to buy it? How does it work? Does anyone have any experience of the process?

It's unlikely to be anything to do with the council. If its been lying for years it'll be privately owned so your first problem is finding the owner.

There was a house in my mums street lay empty for 30 years. Was an eyesore. The owner got numerous offers but refused to sell until finally this year.

The buyer got it for slightly less than half the price an identical (habital) one sold for. Theyve worked non stop & are now living it only months after buying it. A lot of hard work but worth it & it's great seeing the house looking good & lived in

Thanks for info. I understand I need to find the registered owner.

I'd be delighted to get it for under half price of what it would cost done up.

What would be my next steps?

Pay Land registry to get name of the owner

Write to the owner and express interest in buying it.

Bear in mind you can't get a "normal" mortgage on a derelict property. You need to speak to a mortgage broker about what sort of specialist mortgages would be available to you. Try London and Country mortgage brokers.

Thanks so much.
