How easy is it to replace basin and bath taps?

I am currently trying to spruce up a bathroom on a very limited budget.

I have some new bath and basin taps to replace the current ones and am thinking of braving this myself. I’ve bought one of the special wrenches and watched a You Tube video and it doesn’t look too hard….famous last words!

Is it reasonably straight forward? There is no local valve so I will turn the water off at the mains.

Whilst I’m at it, how hard is to replace a whole flush mechanism?!!

Anyone tried it?

It's doable.
Taps - Depends on the access. Basin taps are generally easier than baths as usually more space to work in.

Look carefully at the space you have and make sure the YouTube videos are for a similar set up and appropriate for the type of tap you're fitting. Make sure you have the right tools. Allow at least double the time you think it will take.

Assuming you mean toilet flush mechanism, the same applies - plan carefully - make sure you have the correct replacement part (they can look very similar) or... start early in the morning on a working day to allow time to go back to plumbers merchant to get extra bits when you realise you've got the wrong part...

Thank you. The taps are the same type I think, I had a plumber out to quote and he checked and said they were the same.

Toilet I feel less confident about as I looked online and couldn’t see a mechanism that looked the same. I think the entire flush as in ballcock, valves, flush handle etc all needs replacing. Might ask if I can each though!

My 19 year old son replaced my kitchen tap. It took a bit of time, but he did it fairly easily. If a 19 year old can, I'd guess it can't be too difficult?
BTW he does engineering at college, but nothing about plumbing!

If the taps are on the far side of the bath, with no access from underneath except by taking the bath out, then it's a pretty big job to replace them. You'd most likely have to remove the bath, and ideally replace at least the bottom row of tiles after you put it back.

If the taps are on the end of the bath and you can get access reasonably easily by removing a bath panel, then the job is much more doable.

Thanks, yes the taps are at the end and the panel is being replaced anyway - also hopefully by me!

I have a plumber coming next week to replace the flush so I think I’ll give it a go and worst case can leave the water off til the plumber comes out and he can salvage it if I make a mess!
