What is the best thing in your kitchen - or what you wish you had done?

We will be having an extension built this summer, massively increasing the size of the kitchen and also adding a massive utility/storage/laundry room on the side.
I have a floor plan, but no more idea than that currently apart from the concept of an island (without sink/hob etc on it, but wine fridge and seating area included) no real ideas. Not a kitchen /diner and without french/patio doors so lots of wall space to play with, the former utility room we think we'd like as a pantry area, then the long thin utility on the side.
So if you had all that to play with, what would you absolutely do, and what would you avoid doing? We are not neat and tidy people, and I'm keen to give us the best chance of being organised in the future

Boiling water tap is my biggest win
Biggest regret is getting cheap worktops thinking we would upgrade later. Get the good ones now.

Favourite things in my kitchen:

Pull out full height larder cupboard. We had to go up a range to get this, but so worth it.

Drawers instead of cupboards for plates and pans. Ours ended up under the hob and coincidentally next to the dishwasher - this is brilliant as you can unstack the dishwasher straight into the drawer.

Glass wall instead of tiles. I note with horror the pp who had a squashed fruit fly problem, but we haven't had this. I just hate grouting so much. Glass comes in a huge range of colours.

Don't economise on worktop - we got granite and it's beautiful.

We didn't have room for a range style cooker, but I love my two stacked ovens. No bending down, and they are on top of two drawers with all the baking sheets, loaf tins etc in. The biggest lower one is a Neff slide and hide, great for not having to stretch over hot glass, really recommend. The top one is a Miele oven/grill/ microwave which is brilliant. Heats up really quickly and ideal if you just need one shelf.

If I'd had room I'd have a wine fridge Wine

We've had our new kitchen since December last year.
Things I love, pull out tap with dual spray. Two stacked full size ovens. Pan drawers rather than cupboards. 1.5 sink with large main bowl so I can soak oven trays and large trays. And last but not least my induction hob.

@CMOTDibbler I really wouldn’t put a second dishwasher in another space, it won’t be as useable (yomping to it, and to unload it) and end up as a ‘spare’ for big occasions only. Those 2 drawer ones are also a pain as they don’t give extra space, just allows it to go on more often.

My DH rolled his eyes too, but honestly it’s the one thing that keeps the kitchen tidy. You never have anything on the side. Yes you have to empty them but one is on as the other starts filling and it’s never an issue.

We still have kids at home, both work and are busy. I cook every day and it’s made life easier. However my DH does empty them so perhaps I’m at the easy end of it Grin

Husband…best dishwasher, chef and general tidier of work surfaces. Also easy on the eye. Sadly can not buy one at B and Q ( or any other kitchen retailer for that matter.)

Quooker (ours has sparkling and filtered water too - love it so much). Breakfast cupboard and larder cupboard, both with plugs inside, so things like toaster, blender, etc are hidden from view but also instantly acccessible. Spice drawer.

I agree with others on having a hot tap. Definitely up there for me as the one must have.
Two dishwashers one in the kitchen and one in the utility if you have the space.
Lighting options, and a dimmer for the lighting over the dining area.
Concealed bins.
A drawer for letters/menus/other bits that otherwise clutter up the place!

I didn't do this as my kitchen extension was 9 years ago but bouncydog beat me to it

All isolator switches in one cupboard.

That means no fused spur switches or your cooker switch being on the walls, you can literally run them all (labelled) into the bottom shelf of a base unit. Put them at the back so you can still use all the space in front.

Another thing I wish I had room for was an appliance shelf in the utility, elbow height for ease of access but the stand mixer, instant pot, slow cooker etc could all live on there rather than in a cupboard like they do now but that truly is first world problems.

And lastly, cutlery bins rather than the drawer inserts, so they are upright instead.

Things I did do and still love

Quooker
Waste disposal unit, mainly so I didn't have to clean the bits that get caught in the plug strainer, the children could tip their left over milk and cereal into the sink too plus toaster crumbs when cleaning the toaster
All my base units are pull out larder units
Tall larder cupboard with internal drawers so I could determine the height of each one
Induction hob with ability to combine zones
My spice drawer is a normal sized drawer but my spices are all laid down, Ikea do a drawer organiser for this purpose.

And lastly, plan all the sockets for appliances, we have ours in neighbouring cupboards with a cut out in the back panel. This means I can turn off and unplug the larder fridge easily before pulling it out, putting it back is done using some string tied around the plug and fed back through the hole meaning you don't have to squeeze between the fridge and cupboards if the lead is short. Same with the washing machine etc.

We have just finished ours. Breakfast pantry is the best thing.
Hot Water dispenser and toaster inside cupboard. Bread bin, tea/ coffee/ cups/ butter dish, tea pot etc etc all inside. Once we have finished breakfast or making tea, just close the doors and all that ‘clutter’ is hidden

Built in dish soap dispenser at sink. No crappy looking fairy bottle in the way.
