Which brand paint for all white?

What’s the best brand for whites ? We’ll be doing all white or may be cream. Would expensive brands make a different? It’s a large house and we are on a tight budget. Is it a good idea to do the first coat in a cheap brand (willow, wickes etc) and the second one with a more expensive one (dulux?)
We don’t prefer spending on credit cards, but painting is a long term thing. So if it’s best to use expensive paint (for looks, maintenance and durability), we can stretch and get it done.
Is expensive paint worth it for whites/creams ?

We had wickes trade Matt white when we got our house as we needed to cover a lot of wall quickly. It was definitely a false economy as it didn’t look great and after about two years it desperately needed doing again. We’ve now used Dulux rock salt which is a lovely white and wears much better.

Our decorator requested Leyland trade matt white for the ceilings.
Weve got Leyland trade magnolia on most of the walls too, but accept that isnt a popular choice!

Just done most of our house in little Greene loft white. It looks really lovely and the tone changes slightly throughout the day depending on the light. The decorators commented on how nice it was to work with. So definitely worth spending £££

Thanks :)

Also, what’s best for while walls? Silk or Matt or ?

My entire house was previously done in one neutral colour (khaki mist) in dulux endurance. We had major renovations and wanted pure white and went with a trade version. It's truly rubbish. It can't be wiped down, scuffs and marks have to be retouched with more paint, it's flat and has flaked in places.

I'll be using dulux again next time

Johnstone's covaplus. Absolutely lovely and really good coverage

I recently used johnstones pure brilliant white. It looks great and I would definitely use it again

Dulux Trade Matt is very good - you get a really solid white with two coats (have had to do four with others in the past).
It is very matt though - which I think looks great, but might not be the best for high traffic areas if you want to be able to wipe down.

I second Johnstone's pure brilliant white. It's often on offer in ASDA and sometimes in Tesco.

Also a Johnstones fan here, try and stretch to trade formula.

Although I’d be tempted to do the first couple coats with something cheap as chips, I think it’s a false economy as the more expensive paints have a higher pigment concentration, and you’ll get a brighter finish with less coats.

What's the difference between trade and none trade paints?

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/04/2022 05:46

Trade paints have less water and higher pigment concentration I believe. I definitely noticed the difference when I bought Dulux Trade Matt from a Dulux Decorator Centre over the stuff you buy in B&Q. Much thicker, went on really easily and covered well. I found the same with Johnstone's I had mixed to a Farrow and Ball colour.

Thank you

Dulux Super Matt is the best all purpose white, it's great coverage. Buy the 10l tubs and check for offers, Toolstation had it on offer recently.

OI know a person who decorates and he thinks Crown paints are good
