Thinking about moving to Birmingham

I am thinking about moving to Birmingham, how much are house/ flats for a one bedroom? Are there plenty of affordable properties? I will probably rent first, on average how much is rent for a single person? If I lived outside Birmingham is this more affordable and how easy is it to travel into Birmingham? Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Birmingham is like London, different areas are more expensive than others just because they are perceived as smarter more desirable but may be just a short distance apart.
So Harborne is more desirable than Weoley Castle
Edgbaston better than Selly Oak.
Premium areas like Bournville.
Some areas are also ‘up-coming’ such as Longbridge.
I personally would prefer a nicer property in a good location in a slightly less desirable borough, rather than a poorer property in an expensive borough.

Your best bet is to trawl through Rightmove looking at both rental properties and those for sale. I know South West Birmingham the best and in comparison where I live (Cotswolds) it is very much cheaper.
Great public transport and you’re never far from green spaces and the real countryside.

Like all big cities - there are hugely expensive areas, there are some areas you wouldn't choose to live if you can possibly afford not to, and then there is everywhere in between.

No, generally, it wouldn't be cheaper to live outside and commute in, even before you think of the hours you would lose every week.

Will you be working in the City Centre, or somewhere else?

Keep in mind Birmingham is a HUGE City. Even within one postcode, there is a HUGE variety of housing.

We might be able to help more if you have a look on Rightmove and then say "What's it like here?"

Birmingham is brilliant. I love it. People are so friendly and it's am incredibly green city if you get out of the centre. I've lived here since I cane to university in 2006. I've not rented in about 8 years but I think it's got pretty expensive tbh I'm shocked at what younger colleagues have to shell out. Although it depends where you're coming from, it might seem cheap by comparison. Feel free to message me if you want any advice on areas etc...

Driving in and out of Birmingham is a nightmare as in most big cities but the trains are pretty good. As stated, prices vary massively depending on the area. I’d agree looking at Rightmove and seeing what is in your budget.

I love Birmingham. Although I do not live in Birmingham (I live in Solihull which is very close), it’s a great city. So much work taking place for the Commonwealth Games.

What do you want from Birmingham? It might be cheaper to live outside of the city but commuting can bring the price up. Rightmove is your friend!

I lived in Birmingham for 12 years and miss it dearly. Currently renting in Winchester due to job relocation South and depressed lol due to the lack of diversity although i’m looking to buy very soon. Birmingham has so much going for it including the commonwealth games and it has changed a lot over the last 10 years. Prices are rising fast so I would be prepared. There are a variety of areas to choose from depending on budget and needs. Also has a good grammar school system. You'll be spoilt for choice with affordable lovely period houses.

Perhaps if you gave us your budget we could guide you as to where the Ok bits are ?
I moved back to Birmingham a couple of years ago I’ve got to be honest I was quite shocked in comparison to Manchester 🥵 howI moved back to Birmingham a couple of years ago I’ve got to be honest I was quite shocked in comparison to Manchester how little investment there’s been. I would’ve expected that the Commonwealth Games would’ve changed all that but it looks like we’re still waiting.

Overall though it’s not a bad place at all and when I lick it what friends are paying for a very shabby three bed semi in London I’m always absolutely horrified.
