Buying a house in london (anything?!) for £500k

Is it even possible, particularly near the city so no longer commutes.
I don't really want to be subject to a leasehold property so am looking for freehold but think it's probably impossible to get a house for this budget nearby. I also don't want to end up in an area I can't safely walk down the road in.

Am I mad hoping for this? Should I consider a leasehold place or give up and move further out?!

Yes SE London for a 500k house. Lee, Grove Park, Catford, Eltham, South Norwood, Anerley, Woolwich, Plumstead for an SE postcode.
A bit further out, Croydon, Bromley, Sutton.

None of the places mentioned are near the City, in terms of short commutes (less than 30 mins door to door).

This is one in Tooting near to both the tube and a train station.

The road can be a bit of a rat run in the mornings, but it's a nice area.

If you are not set on a house then I would look for a share of freehold Victorian conversion flat within a short walk from Lewisham Station. The trains to Cannon St are quick and you have the DLR as a back up option in case of the rare but occasional issue with Southeastern trains.

South Norwood (Norwood Junction) is the last stop on the fast train line, 12 minutes into London Bridge, 17 minutes to Blackfriars.

Lee station is 25 mins to Cannon Street

And 12 minutes to London Bridge

It's zone 3
