New build and limited DIY know-how

We’ve just moved into a new build property and the walls are like paper! Myself and my OH will usually have a go at a bit of DIY but aren’t confident with plasterboard fittings so are going to ask a professional to come in and put up some things.

The curtains from our last house are heavy, insulated material- will these be be too much for such thin walls? We’ve also got a couple of heavy mirrors- do I need to think about something lighter? Any advice would be great.

We moved into a new build and had the same problem! We managed to hang heavy mirrors and curtains but there is a special attachment we got for our drill, and special little yellow things that plugged into the holes to grip it better. The plaster is so thin it literally peels off every time I redecorate and use masking tape 😩

A joiner or decent handyman will know the correct fittings to use to hang heavy objects on plasterboard walls and when to put them into the studs.

If your curtains and poles are very heavy he/ she may fit a bit of timber onto the wall first and then screw into that. It will look fine if you paint it to match the walls, it will blend in and hardly be seen.

Heavy insulated curtains will reduce noise transmission as well as looking lovely, it would be a shame not to use them.

Personally I like to hang curtains as high as possible, in a new build I’d have them right up to just under the coving .
