Upstairs Utility Room

We are currently renovating our house and was wondering does anyone have an upstairs utility room

We have a shower room and a bathroom and would likely change the shower room into the utility room but keep the shower

My question is, if you have an upstairs utility room is it really noisy?

We have an upstairs utility cupboard and it is fine. We do have pretty thick walls though and don't tend to run the machiens overnight.

Our laundry room is upstairs; this is fairly standard in the US in a two-story house when all the bedrooms are upstairs. It's not very noisy, but we usually don't run the washing machine or dryer while people are sleeping.

When I design my own home - in my dreams - I shall do this. Makes every sense!

I was reading something on a Facebook group recently that was talking about this. It was mainly Americans who pretty much all had upstairs utility rooms and just didn't understand having them downstairs. After quite a lengthy discussion about the convenience of having them close to the kitchen, muddy clothes straight in the machine without trailing through the house etc many were converted to downstairs utility rooms. Depends what fits your lifestyle really!

Not quite a utility room but we have the washing machine and dryer stacked in a cupboard upstairs. It saves dragging laundry downstairs so I think it’s quite practical. Noise isn’t a problem, we don’t do laundry overnight anyway.

I think it depends on what you intend to use your utility room for. Just washer and dryer, then that would work fine. But we use our utility room for storing cleaning supplies, muddy boots/shoes, coats, spillover from the kitchen (so we keep extra loaves of bread in there, etc.) plus a chest freezer. I wouldn't want any of that upstairs personally.

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/04/2022 10:10

I think it depends on whether you will want to hang washing up outdoors to dry (something to think about with rising electricity prices). I hang laundry out whenever I can and I wouldn't want to be carting baskets full of wet stuff down the stairs.

Upstairs laundry rooms are for people that don’t line dry. I wouldn’t want it upstairs myself.

I like a utility to incorporate muddy clothes and boots etc plus the cat food as well as laundry. But we live in the country and have practical requirements.

We considered having the washing machine upstairs but I'd rather carry light dry laundry downstairs to wash than heavy wet laundry to line dry. We dry outside as much as possible.

We also kept our downstairs bathroom (have a shower room upstairs), washing machine will be in a utility cupboard next to it so no one needs to traipse upstairs in grubby clothes / muddy sports kit etc. Dog can go straight in the bath after a muddy walk.

So this is v extravagant but in an Ideal world i would have both. I like to line dry as much as possible but would love to be able to just wash towels etc upstairs.

hidethetoaster · 05/04/2022 22:00

Tried to have upstairs utility room but we didn't have the space.

Why must we lug laundry up and down stairs? Just keep it all upstairs all the time if you can.

I'm not convinced by the argument above about keeping muddy clothes downstairs. Do you come in from a walk a strip in your kitchen?

BlueLu · 05/04/2022 22:06

We built an upstairs laundry cupboard when we bought this house because we moved from somewhere with a tiny utility room and I didn't want to go back to a washing machine in the kitchen. We line dry as much as possible and have no issues carrying washing down wet. We also enjoy being outside and getting mucky so eventual dream house will have a utility come boot room but for now we haven't found taking dirty things upstairs too much of a chore either.

prescribingmum · 05/04/2022 22:09

We have it upstairs and line dry wherever possible. As a pp said, it is a laundry room rather than utility - washing machine and tumble dryer stacked and sufficient storage for washing powders. We also have one of those pulley racks on the ceiling.

I don't really get the logic with not carrying downstairs. When warm and dry, we carry it down and line dry. If wet, it doesn't need to go anywhere - straight from bathroom into laundry room and into wardrobes once clean and dry. If the utility was downstairs, we would be carrying dirty and clean washing down and back up all year round.

LivesinLondon2000 · 06/04/2022 09:02

Yes agree if it’s upstairs it is a laundry room rather than a utility. That’s what we have but then we live in London and very rarely come home in clothes so muddy we wouldn’t go upstairs to get changed. I also prefer to keep all clothes upstairs - mainly because there’s a lot of stairs in our typically London townhouse so don’t want to be carrying laundry up and down all the time. I don’t line dry either but I have a heated airer in the room to dry clothes on and a dehumidifier to stop damp or I just open the window if it’s not freezing out.
A utility room downstairs aswell would be the ideal but we don’t really have space. We do have a cellar to store large items, tools, hoover etc. though.

In houses similar to mine, I notice a trend for boot rooms downstairs when people are redesigning now rather than utility rooms particularly for people with dogs - if possible with a separate side door to avoid coming in the front door. Handy to have somewhere to wash the dog, leave muddy boots in etc.

GOODCAT · 06/04/2022 09:16

Is a laundry chute an option with a utility room downstairs to make it easier to line dry?

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 06/04/2022 09:29

My dream house will have both an upstairs laundry (with washing machine and dryer) and a downstairs utility (with washing machine and other boot room/domestic storage).

NotSoLittle · 14/04/2022 01:55

Are you detatched? If not might be noisy for neighbours

Marchitectmummy · 14/04/2022 02:08

We have our main utility room downstairs but a utility cupboard on the 1st floor so useful.
