Need to fit a side-gate diagonally to house

Is this even possible, and how? Our favourite handyman died last year of cancer, RIP, so I can't ask him, and we haven't so far had a reply to messages to local fencing companies.

Attached is a pic of the area. We just inherited this house, and need a gate urgently as have a dog.

Also, is this a job I could do myself with a drill, a spirit level and some concrete, or realistically will I have to try fencers in the next town?

Could be! I don't blame them if so!

I'm not overly impressed with chequertrade.

ask around neighbours and friends. An older person who knows how to use a saw and a drill could do it quite easily.

important points are:

screw a substantial wooden gatepost to the wall, using "frame fixings" which are long screws with long wall plugs. Put the hinge side on the house as it will withstand the weight. Not on the corner bricks.

You can probably buy a standard-sized gate (probably around 32", 30", 28" or 36") and, having hung it on the hinge-post, position the locking post to suit the size of the gate. It will sag a bit over time so have it a bit higher and a bit looser than you think.

T-hinges are rubbish. Splash out on hook-and-band hinges, they will last longer than the gate, and longer than you. They are supposed to be 1/3rd the width of the gate. So around 10"-12". Get galvanised ones and paint before fitting. Fit the top hook upside down if you don't want the gate to be lifted off.

Get a couple of bolts, one near the top and one near the bottom, that you can fit padlocks to if necessary. Not expensive. Again, galvanised, and paint before fixing.

If you want a weatherproof padlock, the Squire 660 is better than more modern ones.

Examples but I got a second-hand hardwood front door for next to nothing, from a person foolishly fitting a plastic one. It needs two people to lift it. You must fit a lintel or top to throw the rain off. An offcut of decking board will do.
