installing a new window to side wall

Hi all , We are in an end of terrace house and have a windowless bathroom on the 1st floor , with a wall along the end of terrace wall, if that makes sense. I’d love to add a window (even if glazed ones that can’t be opened) to let in more light . Does this typically require planning permission ?

www.planningportal.co.uk/permission/common-projects/doors-and-windows/planning-permission

I read that as saying permitted development as long as obscure glazed and non opening below 1.7m. So a std bathroom window with a fan light would work.

But do check for conservation areas removing permitted development rights!

Also is the wall on the boundary? Next door could build and cover the window in future. I found this page that made me laugh: www.oakconservatories.co.uk/glazing-next-to-a-boundary-is-not-a-good-move/

If it is near the boundary you can't usually build a window in a side wall due to planning regs- its to prevent spread of fire. You may be able to have a very small one, but not a larger one.

Planning permission not needed but need to follow Building Regs. Another option to consider if you simply want daylight would be a sun tunnel. Velux make them. You could put "sun tunnel" into the searchbox on Mumsnet for users views.

First floor side windows do not need planning permission if the glazing is obscure and the opening part of the window if 1.7 metres above internal floor level. If not, then you need to apply for planning permission (£206). Unlikely to get approved if window would cause some overlooking into neighbours house/garden.
