What do you flush down your loo?

Lately, a few threads about saniflo, macerators, etc. have sprouted out on here, and I've been surprised seeing people commenting along the lines "make sure you don't put down wipes, sanitary products, cotton pads, etc. if you have THIS type of system".

I mean, is it really still considered ok to flush all those products down the "normal" drain??? Shock

Definitely no wipes or sanitary products. I got really told off for causing a huge drain blockage in my youth!

nearlyspringyay · 30/03/2022 13:20

When we moved into our house there was an issue with the drains, when the cover was pulled up it was full of condoms, wrong but slightly understandable, and beer bottle caps. There must have been several hundred in there.

We flush wee, poo, paper and vomit.

Smokeahontas · 30/03/2022 13:26

Loo roll / urine / shit / vomit / bleach.

I’m always baffled at how people manage to get nappies to even flush. Surely they’d get clogged in the bowl?

MinnieMountain · 30/03/2022 13:30

I worked for Anglian Water for a bit. My line manager used to rant that there’s no such thing as a flushable wipe.

BeyondMyWits · 30/03/2022 13:36

Poo, pee, puke and paper...

noblegreenk · 30/03/2022 13:36

Wee, poo, used tampons (not applicators) and toilet paper. Occasionally my toddler flushes a baby wipe down there but she's getting better with not doing that.

Agree! I have to admit, I used to flush 'flushable' wipes but, after seeing documentaries about London drains a few years ago, realised the flushable claim is basically a lie.

Shouldn't be flushing the tampons. They should be going in the bin not the toilet

There are wipes marked 'fine to flush' that do break down now. We still bin them as our new, more eco toilets have a rubbish flush

Tampons are a massive no and have been for years
Branleuse · 30/03/2022 13:57

liquidy food that is too runny for the food waste bin, such as soup thats gone off, and leftover cereal goes down the toilet.

longtompot · 30/03/2022 13:57

We had a house, a rental, with a saniflo loo and we couldn't even flush loo paper down it as it would block up. We had to have a bin for that. I would never get one again, even if they are 1000% better than 25+ years on. We had a party, it got blocked and flooded sewage down the ground floor room walls Envy

Wnkingawalrus · 30/03/2022 14:03

Never underestimate the ability of a child to flush something they shouldn’t.

Abouttimemum · 30/03/2022 14:13

There is no such this as a flushable wipe and they should be banned from being able to say it. Even kitchen roll can’t go down there.

Aside from those two everything else is common sense and people are thick.

First to complain when sewage gets spilled into their back yard or their local rivers though.

Abouttimemum · 30/03/2022 14:15

Oh my god, is someone actually putting tampons down there!?

I despair.

Hugasauras · 30/03/2022 14:15

There are new fine to flush wipes that have to fit certain criteria to be certified as such.

Yes this.

This has been one of the main issues down the years.

And in answer to the sh.t police question, water companies of course.
They are the companies having to deal with it.
And getting fined. So they are now fighting back so to speak. It has made it cost effective to them to do so.

emmathedilemma · 30/03/2022 14:27

Even the wipes that are certified as fine to flush will block your drains if you're not careful. The criteria they have to meet to be certified as such is flakey at best e.g. it passes if it surcharges but doesn't floor over the bowl on the first flush but clears it on the second. If you have any sort of cracks or step joints type defects in your pipes they will still snag and potentially cause blockages. The instructions for use state to only flush one at a time on a full flush.......I wonder how many people even read the instructions let alone follow them??

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/03/2022 14:30

Pee
Poo
Paper (loo paper)
Puke

Like @MinnieMountain I used to work for a water company. I've been to too many sewage treatment works and seen the operatives raking out the non-biodegradable stuff like wipes off the inlet screens then dumping it I skips to go off to landfill to even consider it.
(I worked on the emergency line for a while. We were often asked to recover rings, mobile phones and even false teeth -ewww!)

Dogmum40 · 30/03/2022 14:35

Just human waste and toilet paper here!

I genuinely cannot believe someone flushes tampons down the toilet and another flushes cereal or runny food waste! And people wonder why there’s so many sewage blockages! I have a friend that deals with fatbergs and toilet blockages and honestly it is not ok to flush anything but human waste and toilet paper down toilets!

Please stop it! Just use a bin…

Butteryflakycrust83 · 30/03/2022 14:38

I am terrible for tampons in the middle of the night!

HopefulProcrastinator · 30/03/2022 14:46

You should feel terrible about it. Just because it's not blocking your part of the system, it doesn't mean it's not blocking the system somewhere else for some poor sod to have to clean and clear.

Can you even imagine what a bloody tampon dipped in other people's waste mixed up with wipes must look and smell like?

Don't be so fucking selfish!

We learnt this the very hard way when we ran out of toilet roll, used kitchen paper until shops opened, £150 plumber charge.

What is the difference between runny food waste and shit or sick? Genuine question.
Hohofortherobbers · 30/03/2022 14:59

Runny food waste gas fat in it which will solidify and contribute to datbergs. Human waste does not have fat in it.... Unless you have cystic fibrosis or are on the diet pill which flushes fat out of you
