Can we LVT over existing floor tiles? Pics attached.

Hi.

We had our kitchen revamped recently but decided to keep the floor installed by previous owner. However we now regret this decision, as we think the patterned tiles are just "too much" ... and don't go well with the rest of the kitchen. We would like something much simpler, like a plain, concrete look ... (pic attached).

However we are still traumatised by the disruption of having work done, so we want a quick, easy and LEAST MESSY solution.

Can we LVT over these tiles?

I like LVT, but in your scenario the only reason I'd switch from those tiles to that lvt would be because the tiles are top cold underfoot. I agree with PPs that they are amazing and lookmloads better than your proposed lvts

I think the brick wall is the issue. It dominates a narrow room and has no practical use. I too would keep the floor and redesign the wall.

If you must cover the floor, you screed it and then use whatever LVT you want. It costs a lot though! We have had it done over honed (very grubby) limestone and we used Amtico. It’s flexible but with a screed it makes no odds. What you must have is a thick wear layer. The core doesn’t matter.

Kitchen looks really good with your tiles, could you live with them for a few months and see if you still want to change them?

MrsApplepants · 27/03/2022 11:00

Sorry Op, I would keep the current floor and paint the brick white. Much nicer.

Sandrine1982 · 27/03/2022 11:12

Thanks everyone. We love the brick wall, that's definitely staying as it is. It's gorgeous

I would put some shelves on the brick wall with some plants and decorative bits and bobs to break up the brick wall a bit, the tiles are fine as they are. I'm not sure the room would gain anything from changing the flooring.

Agree with pps, love the floor dislike the brick.

No way would I ever put cheap plastic flooring over good quality tiles.

If you insist on keeping the brick, just paint it white.

roxisolerenshaw · 27/03/2022 15:46

I love the floor you have now, I wouldn't change it.

ABitBesotted · 27/03/2022 18:39

Omg I can't believe people prefer the existing tiles.

Is it possible to tile over tiles?

@MarmiteCoriander

Its the 80's brick wall that needs to go- not the floor tiles!!!

No, the floor level would end up too high.
stickygotstuck · 27/03/2022 19:45

Ha, that's funny OP! We just had the original kitchen tiles replaced with vynil, and our old floor was very similar to your 'new floor', and our new vynil is very much like your original tiles. I do love those tiles. Not too busy for me (and I speak as someone who generally shuns pattens! I just found the old one way too boring. A few tiles were cracked too)

As for the technical side, we did have the tiles and plywood stripped and replaced with new plywood plus vynil. Screeding would take the floor level too high and the ceiling is lowish.

stuntbubbles · 28/03/2022 10:33

In all honesty, OP, I don’t love the original tiles – it’s just that they’re so much better than the flooring you want to replace them with, which just doesn’t go with your new kitchen.

Your new kitchen has white and wood and the funky brick wall, and the floor you want is the beige-yellow of a tired fixer-upper labelled “needs modernisation” on RightMove. I think with the modern, busy aspects of your kitchen you’re right, you need something less busy on the floor, but it still needs to be modern and fresh vs the one you’re suggesting.

HotChoc10 · 28/03/2022 10:45

I love the brick wall too! But also prefer the current tiles - sorry. If you were going to change them I'd go for a warm terracotta or something.
