DIY query re fixing blackout blinds

Looking for advice- have googled but can't find the solution. I need to install blackout blinds on the windows in my and DP's bedroom. He CANNOT sleep with light pouring in and our new window/blinds are proving very porous. I'll attach a pic to show. The frames are PVC. The blinds are quite flush to the frames so I don't think anything can go under them. Is my only solution to install the blackout blinds over the whole lot? i.e. attach to the wall above the pvc frames??

We made our own non permanent blackout blinds to go over the shutters in our bedroom as we couldn't sleep with just those as they didn't block out all the light. We bought a length of blackout material from Amazon, and cut into 2 so we'd have a small overlap. Used white velcro tape to stick around the top edge of the shutter frame (not noticeable) and on the material. We stick them up every night and then take down, fold up, and store away during the day. They work a treat and cost about £10-£15 in total.

Thanks @parkrunner1977 that sounds very effective. I just know that neither of us could be arsed with the putting up and taking down each day. It would require a step ladder twice a day. I guess I'm trying to find a solution that's easy to use.

We used these

Not kidding... We cut up the box from our baby's cot and shoved a piece in each section of the window at night, it was just a temporary thing to stop him waking early, anyway he's nearly 3 now and we're still using them, great for keeping the heat out as well.
Then when he moved to his own room we found another bit of cardboard for his window, so he doesn't wake until 9am now.

Thanks @ILoveAllRainbowsx they look interesting. So, when they're installed, can you raise them and lower them like regular blinds?

@johnd2 thanks- tbh I'd do that except the windows are both big and difficult to get close to coz of furniture in the way, so it'd be a real palaver. But glad it worked for your kid!

I had some made to measure and with fitting were only £65 each. I'll never attempt it myself ever again lol.

You put them up and down using clips like bulldog clips.

I see, thanks @ILoveAllRainbowsx

I have blinds and blackout curtains (and voiles - I like my 'window-ware) !

RandomMess · 25/03/2022 21:29

Yep I have black vertical blinds, dark wallpaper, black huge velour curtains that have blackout linings.

Hugasauras · 25/03/2022 21:39

We have double roller day/night blackout blinds:

Not sure if that would be an option! They work really well.

hupfpferd · 26/03/2022 12:00

I have voiles, blackout roller and blackout curtains. It's still not pitch dark but it's close.

Does your window have a recess? Otherwise you can mount a roller blackout across the whole front of the window in front of your existing blinds.

Blinds 2 go are good.

QuestionsConstance · 05/04/2022 13:56

Thank @hupfpferd only just saw this. Yes that's the problem - there's no space to fit a blackout blind between the glass and the Venetian blinds. I think you're right, I'll have to wall-mount a blackout roller blind over the whole lot.

MossyBottom · 05/04/2022 13:59

I have blackout blinds at all the bedroom windows. One of them has no recess so it's fixed above, a bit like a curtain rail would be. Actually cuts out more light than the recessed ones.
