can anyone give any insight on hartlepool ,family live near elwick road near ward jackson park ,anyone familiar with this area and advise on if its a nice area?
I would need primary school and secondary school for children so really want to know if there are good schools around for them and what the general area is like?
inlaws have not lived here long so cant advise on schools or area as they never really leave the house!!

I wouldn’t want to live in Hartlepool. 😱 Perhaps you should consider North Yorkshire, which is lovely and you would still be closer to his family.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 25/03/2022 09:25

We are in Seaton Carew.. Beautiful place

Greatham Primary school is fabulous. Less than 100 pupils.
Local school is well sought after. The village of Elwick is amazing too.

MajesticallyAwkward · 25/03/2022 09:29

I wouldn't recommend Hartlepool, there are nice areas there but I'm not familiar enough with them and hear more about it being iffy.

There's Seaton Carew not far away and that's a bit nicer while still being close. Further out though you've got sedgefield, durham, wynyard. I have a friend just bought a lovely house in Durham near coxhoe. Darlington is further away but having lived there I can recommend as a lovely place to live with children, very family friendly and some nice schools (and has some central government depts relocating and a fair bit of development because of that). Naturally every area has the dodgy bits to avoid so I'd recommend visiting before you commit.

Hi OP. Like anywhere, it has its rough areas. Much of Hartlepool is very deprived indeed, however some parts are lovely. They area around Ward Jackson Park is very nice, big lovely houses that are much less expensive than other areas of the country. Seaton Carew is nice, although there’s a big nuclear plant in view. Hartlepool town centre has a big asda, Morrisons, a M&S foodhall, a very nice marina. Places like Castle Eden, Elwick, Sedgefield are really nice. Best to spend a few days visiting to getting the feel of the place.

I'm also intrigued as to where @dollymuchmuchness lives to enable me to critique her place of abode.

OP I live in Hartlepool, have done all my life. I spent my working life all over the country and not once did I find anywhere I'd rather live. I live in the area your in laws do (West Park) and it's beautiful. Every town has areas that have challenges, but we have a huge number of incomers now to the town who love the friendliness and kindness they are shown by Poolies.

I'm guessing Dolly, Majestically etc are going by what's in the news. I'd recommend joining some of the Facebook community pages to get a feel for the people and the areas. If you post about specific areas you will be given the unvarnished truth about whether people would choose to live there or not :)

Finally, this was on Channel 4 last night, the first section shows where the couple who were househunting live now - in Hartlepool. It's not all flat caps and whippets.

It is indeed :) I'd just been on twitter and spotted this in trending, and was coming back on to point out that although the headline makes London sound like the worst place to live obviously there's a lot more to a place than a soundbite. I hope you come to Hartlepool to have a good look around, we're a very welcoming bunch up here!

My lovely dentist is from Hartlepool she says that everyone in Hartlepool has amazing teeth because of the naturally occurring minerals in the water there… so that’s something to consider!

HanSB · 25/03/2022 15:42

You really need to spend some time anywhere you are planning to move. I wouldn’t ever move to Hartlepool especially if you are coming from London. It’s a very poor and deprived area and felt depressing to me. As a Londoner I would prefer to move to a bigger town, maybe Durham?

Blossomtoes · 25/03/2022 15:48

I’d live there in a heartbeat. By the sea, surrounded by beautiful countryside with house prices that make southerners weep. What’s not to love?

How long did you spend in Hartlepool? Which area did you live in? Hartlepool is a nice place to live, with some deprived areas - the same as every place I ever worked at (always for 6 months minimum). I wouldn't live anywhere else.

I usually spend 1-2 weeks there a year staying by the marina to visit my husband’s grandparents and family friends who still live there. His parents and the rest of the family grew up there but all moved to London. I’m sorry but it’s such a depressing area to me and the only reason to visit is family ties. Obviously you live there and love it but OP needs to spend actual time there to make up her own mind, where would be the case wherever you decide to relocate as it’s such a big life decision.

LongSummers · 06/04/2022 20:11

Hi OP my dad was from there, left for boarding school and uni and then stayed in the south but his parents continued living there - having been to HP but not knowing it very well I would agree with the poster above who recommended Darlington - still not far from your husbands family and it’s a fab place - reasonably priced property, easy to get around. Some areas better than others but the West End is the “posh” bit but still so reasonable by southern standards!

Singh1900000 · 05/07/2023 18:20

Hi I am living in Hartlepool 3 bed room house housing association property very good city center location I want to move to London any one living in London who want to swap house

storypushers · 06/07/2023 11:48

Some lovely villages within a 20 min radius. (Including where I live) so if you both drive I'd recommend living a little further out than Hartlepool itself

FirmFinch · 11/05/2025 15:44

Nothing wrong with Hartlepool. Every town has its troublesome areas but, on the whole, it's great. The only downside is that it's not the hottest spot in the country, but then there's always holidays abroad 😎

Don't... I say that as someone who has lived in Hartlepool.

I have lived in some rough places and its been by far the roughest of them. I can handle rough, but I wouldn't move back. There is also far less to do there now than when I lived their, its turning more into a ghost town.

There are nice places in the NE, depends what you want. Durham City has a lot of southern students so probably less jarring for a southerner but more expensive, theres lots of picturesque little villages like Lanchester and Beamish dotted around but then theres also places that are living hell, I would avoid places like Hartlepool, Peterlee, Shotton etc...

Towns also have good side and bad sides usually, some the good sides are far enough removed from the bad that its OK but in hartlepool trouble gets around.

I would suggest not buying blind but actually coming up and viewing the areas.
