Can anyone tell me about this fire and back boiler please? We've recently had a survey where the surveyor recommended we keep it?! Not sure why since it's 37 years old?!

I’m not sure if I can be much help but I bought a house with one of these. It was really unreliable and the quote to just have it removed was £500. That was about 15 years ago so I’m sure it would cost more now. I’m not sure why anyone would recommend you keep it, it must be so inefficient now.

The last house I bought had one of these. I was told they are very very reliable but I found it hugely inefficient so o put a combo boiler and log burner in instead!

My late parents had one until just a few years ago and it was fine.
They had it serviced annually and it was very reliable, their plumber said that as it was still working perfectly and he could still get any necessary spares it made sense to keep it.
In the end the whole system was replaced but this was because the downstairs room where the fire/boiler was situated was converted into a downstairs bedroom.

We had one of these in a previous house. When we moved in we had it serviced and the chap said that it was actually working really efficiently and he would not advise we change it. He said they last for years and years, much better than newer boilers. The only issue we had was the gas fire in front of it was a bit ugly The heating did work perfectly well though.

its cool thx

I had one of these in my old house. Ugly things, but they do their job well. Our plumber said keep it going as long as possible as "they just don't make 'em like they used to". He said new boilers do well to last 10-15 years now as they have so many different parts, and a lot of the insides made of plastic now so break by the time they're 12-15 years old. I kept it in the end, never caused me any problems in the years I lived there.
Current house with a vailant combi boiler.....i've had five call outs in 3 years to the boiler because of various problems (leaking boiler twice, fault codes three times).

My folks had a baxi back boiler which gave 40 years of service!!

Ugly fire, not fuel efficient and you have to be careful about ventilation and carbon monoxide poisoning, but seemingly tough as old boots

Whatever boiler you have you should have a decent CO alarm in place really.

We have the same one and are hoping it will last a couple more years so we can afford air source and get rid of gas all together.
I really don't want to replace it with a combi boiler so close to them being phased out.
Have just checked my CO alarm! Good reminder.

Wombat27A · 23/06/2022 16:25

We had one and it was basically a bunsen burner, if you looked at it at the back. They are remarkably expensive to replace and the modern version looks exactly like the old ones.

We replaced it with a gas fire and a new boiler eventually. It was fine whilst we used it...
