Someone died in our new house.

We had to have the floorboards up last week in our new house which uncovered a blackened and charred joist. Turns out,
From talking to a neighbour that there was a fire here, the wife and 2 kids made it out but the man didn’t. He was a drunk apparently and caused the fire. Terribly sad !
Not sure how I feel about living in a house where there was a tragedy like that.
Dh is quite freaked out.
Would it bother you ?

No. Not at all. Most houses have been the scene of a death.

RedskyThisNight · 22/03/2022 15:43

Wouldn't bother me. Many houses will have had someone die in them.

StayAGhost · 22/03/2022 15:43

Blackened and charred joist would worry me
Other than that, nope

RIPWalter · 22/03/2022 15:43

My house is 170 years old, I expect quite a few people died in my house, presumably including children given it is a farm workers cottage in a remote area.

Dying is about the most normal thing in the world, we all do it once.

RewildingAmbridge · 22/03/2022 15:44

My house is over 110 years old, can almost guarantee people have died here. Doesn't bother me

Zonder · 22/03/2022 15:44

It's sad and an unusual thing to discover after you move but as pp said, lots of houses have had people die in them.

gamerchick · 22/03/2022 15:44

The joist would bother me more. I'd want that checked. Otherwise, no. People die in a lot of houses.

LemonMuffins · 22/03/2022 15:46

Wouldn't bother me. I imagine a lot of people die in a lot of houses.

Redglitter · 22/03/2022 15:47

My house is over 100 years old so by the law of averages I'm pretty sure someone's probably died in it. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest

ShavingTheBadger · 22/03/2022 15:47

My mum died in our old house. It makes me happy that she left where and when she wanted to, and was at peace. My house now is 160 years old so no doubt someone has died here - doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

caringcarer · 22/03/2022 15:47

I would want joist sorted but people die at home in their houses. Sad but true. It is not as if mass murders took place there.

Floralnomad · 22/03/2022 15:49

Wouldn’t bother me , my sister lives in our old family home and both of my parents have died in what is her dining room , someone else also died on her drive and it’s a pretty old house so there is probably more that we don’t know about . Nobody has died in our house as we are it’s second owners and the first both survived .

LBOCS2 · 22/03/2022 15:51

I know at least two people have died in our old family home; the previous elderly owner and my DM. It's 140 years old, it's not that surprising.

BusyBeaMe · 22/03/2022 15:52

On the face of it, yes it would freak me out. However, our house is over 200 years old so plenty of people have probably died here. I just don’t know the details!

When we were doing the house up a builder said he saw a boy in the lounge! I’ve not seen anything and the house has a very warm, happy feel about it so I’m not scared.

How do you feel about the vibe of the house?

HollowTalk · 22/03/2022 15:52

A friend of mine was the fireman at a house where someone died and he went on to buy the house!

EleanorDeCleaner · 22/03/2022 15:52

No. Our new neighbours were lovely but very cagey about how the previous owner died - turned out she passed away in the bedroom, I got it out of someone eventually!

No idea why they thought we'd be freaked out by it. The lady had a nice life, loving daughters, was desperate to avoid hospital and ended up just dropping dead one morning at a good age after a minimal spell of reduced mobility. Great way to go I say, hope I do the same.

We still chat to her and ask her how she likes our home improvements. Smile

I appreciate your situation is different but other than getting the joist checked, just accept it and move on - it's done and gone now.

CasperGutman · 22/03/2022 15:53

My house is 100+ years old and used to belong to a local doctor. It seems likely that at least one person has died here, quite possibly several people. We bought it from a recent widow, and for all I know her late husband could well have died here. In themselves, these thoughts don't concern me.

That said, whether or not it makes rational sense, knowing the details of a relatively recent tragic death in the house could well affect how I felt about it, at least for a time.

BeyondMyWits · 22/03/2022 15:53

Previous owner died in mine, it was a probate sale. She died of a heart attack in the hallway at the bottom of the stairs. The family were relieved that she was spared a slow decline with dementia. We were not exactly "happy" someone died there, but it's our house our home... our family have grown up here happily.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 22/03/2022 15:54

It wouldn’t bother me that someone has died in my house.

Whereverilaymycat · 22/03/2022 15:55

It probably wouldn’t bother me too much. I’m more of the mind that we would make new happy memories. Unless it’s a brand new house, you never really know everything that goes on in a house. What’s important is the life you make there.
My husband would probably be more freaked out. It’s a bit of a shock, give yourselves some time to get over it, it’s only natural you’d feel upset about it.

irishfarmer · 22/03/2022 16:05

"People die in houses all the time" yes very true, my home house had 3 people very close to me die in it. But all of natural causes, I didn't think about the fact they had died there.

I think I would be ok with this tragic accident, if a little 'oh' I don't think I could live in a house where there has been a violent death.

Justkeeppedaling · 22/03/2022 16:06

I would imagine someone has died in pretty much every house in Britain/the world. Any house over 30 years old or so anyway.

SpidersAreShitheads · 22/03/2022 16:07

Genuinely thought you were going to say there was a blackened and charred skeleton under the floorboards 😅

NewJersey · 22/03/2022 16:08

It’s sad but I’m not sure why your husband is freaked out. Sounds a bit dramatic.

Elasticatedwaist · 22/03/2022 16:11

I wouldn’t mind if it had been natural causes, I would expect people to have died here. It’s the fact that they burnt to death in an accidental fire I think.
