How much to change all internal doors and skirting?

ThenAgainMaybeIWont · 22/03/2022 14:17

We have typical new build ish white internal doors - probably 11 of them in total.

I'd like to change them all to a light oak and understand that that'll mean all the surrounds and skirting needs changing too.

Before I contact anyone, how much do you think as a ballpark figure?

You only have to change the doors unless you want the skirting & architrave to match but personally I wouldn't want it.

We also recently moved into a new build and I was disappointed that the oak doors on the show house were no-longer available as an option (they were near the top of my options list).
Our internal doors are very nice but we are going to have them replaced with oak finished ones sometime in the future (there are thirteen internal doors and they are all 83-inches tall).

Dougieowner · 22/03/2022 17:33

Oops, posted before I finished!

Haven't looked into costs or availability yet.

LeroyJenkinssss · 22/03/2022 17:40

We’ve just bought an engineered oak door and that was £130 but also unfinished so we have to seal it first. I think it was £150 or so for it finished (the other doors we bought couldn’t be supplied finished so we were concerned about it not matching). Does the framing need to be changed? Or do you think it will look too odd?

WutheringHeights66 · 22/03/2022 19:31

I have oak doors with white architraves and skirting, it looks lovely.

ThenAgainMaybeIWont · 22/03/2022 19:44

Ooh thanks for the replies

I hadn't actually thought about keeping the white surround and skirting - there's nothing wrong with them though at all ... you don't think it would look odd?

ConfusionIsNothingNew · 22/03/2022 19:50

We very recently just got a quote for 15 oak doors, skirting and architrave, it was just shy of £5k.

ThenAgainMaybeIWont · 22/03/2022 19:54

@ConfusionIsNothingNew yes I can imagine that figure tbh and it was what I sort of had in mind

I think I'll go for just doors tbh. I've had a look online to see light oak with keeping the white architrave and skirting and I don't hate it

We have just changed 2 internal doors and I love them! £150 each from B&Q plus £60 fitting each from a joiner.

£5k seems steep unless you are wanting doors that sing to you every morning and make you breakfast.

I don't think I've ever seen brown wooden skirting boards or architraves in a house outside of a National Trust-type stately home - I think that would have been more likely to look odd than white with oak doors!

Please tell me you're keeping that carpet and that the door was purchased to fit the aesthetic!!!! That's just fab carpet.Smile

That made me laugh as I was reading the thread thinking "mine are the opposite, wood stained skirting and architrave and white doors".

@dudsville yup that's my brand new carpet!! It's just gorgeous isn't it! Although it seems to be having a bit of a marmite reaction with F&F so far.

CasperGutman · 23/03/2022 08:52

@Chasingsquirrels there's always an exception to every rule! :-D

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 23/03/2022 09:11

My lovely new doors have white surround and skirting. I really like it although they are paler than oak.

Definitely keep the new white skirting as a pain to do and not needed
Try Todd doors, they are reasonably priced

M0RVEN · 23/03/2022 09:28

Do you mean oak veneer doors? They can only be trimmed a small amount so you need to get the correct sizes.

I know you said you need 11 - how many glazed and how many solid? Work that out, then measure them all. Every single door - often they vary a lot . I just replaced 6 doors in a one bed flat and they were 3 different sizes.

Then go online and get prices.

Add in a cost for handles, latches and hinges - again you can price these online. They vary enormously.

Matt black is very on trend now but they are hard to get and more expensive. Also the black hinge look a bit off in a hallway IMO.

Chrome ( polished , brushed or both - dual finish ) is classic .

Labour will be between £60- 100 per door for a joiner to fit then. Might be more where you live.

Most oak veneer doors can be finished with Osmo door oil, it’s easy but time consuming to do it yourself. Just mask off the glass and handles and sand lightly between coats.

Personally I’d used glazed on every door expect bedrooms, bathrooms and cupboards.

It will make a huge difference to your house.

We have oak doors with white architrave and skirting. We think it looks good.
Our doors cost £150 each 10 years ago and fitting at the time was £40 each too. They still look good and have aged well.

That’s a classic design and won’t date. They still sell that identical door in Howdens and Wickes. They look great !

Lots of good advice thank you - and thanks for that post @M0RVEN

I've attached a pic as to what the doors all look like. Very boring!

I think it is 11 doors - 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, airing cupboard, study, downstairs toilet, living room, kitchen, under stairs cupboard ... actually that's 12! Plus glass and white double doors in a living room - might have to keep those?

I think I'll start with a carpenter and ask him to come out?

About £3k including fitting.

User76745333 · 23/03/2022 22:28

Circa £250 for each door plus about £25 for a decent latch, £10 for hinges and circa £30 for a set of handles plus circa £100 for each door for fitting.
Oil on top.

So yes you’re looking at circa £5k for 11

roxisolerenshaw · 24/03/2022 06:54

I paid £900 for 7 oak veneered doors to include handles, oiling and fitting. That was a couple of years ago. All skirting boards are white. They look lovely!

I would put glass doors in the study , living room and kitchen . You might be able to find a style of door you like that also comes in double glazed style for your living room.

Personally I’d start with measuring and then finding the doors and handles you like. The labour costs are pretty much the same for fitting regardless of the type of door or handle ( assuming that they don’t need a lot of trimming).

You can get doors for £40 or £400. Handles from £10 to £100 or more.

Go for double sprung latches, they are not expensive , about £5-7 max.

So your joiner won’t be able to give you a total cost for the job until you have chosen know your materials.

We had doors done last year. We paid fitting of £50 per door. Paid for doors and door furniture separately. We didn't need new skirting.

M0RVEN · 24/03/2022 20:26

These Wickes doors are similar to the ones that @MrCrackersmum has. They are heavy at around 30kg so will need 3 4” hinges.

Howdens and leader doors have a similar style and I’ve seen it elsewhere too.

Howdens have a more modern oak door called Linear but the glazed version only has a small glazed section. Their Worcester style is lovely in glazed and solid.

But you will need your sizes before you chose as not every door comes in imperial and metric sizes.
