We are making our first ever insurance claim. My partner has got in touch with a couple of painter/plastering companies and hearing nothing at all back. He mentioned the insurance in the emails, does this put people off? Or are we just having bad luck?

Maybe, although in my experience there are a lot of tradespeople are generally just bad at getting back to customers. (some not all!). I tried to get some landscaping done, contacting about 8 companies in the end - only three ever replied, one didnt turn up at the appointment to measure up, an the another one didn't ever send me the quote. There's quite a few threads on here about the general lack of available tradespeople and how they are so busy, they're not able to get back to customers (but where does their work come from?!)

The mention of insurance could well be putting them off. They might be worried about payment timescales. I used to work for a company that need a repair for a customer that they were claiming for under insurance and the insurance company took MONTHS to pay. If some tradespeople have experienced this, it will put them off any more insurance work.

Yes, it would put us off. We have had too many instances of people trying not to pay until their claim paid out or their insurance company refusing to pay the full amount and them trying to knock us down accordingly.

Comefromaway · 22/03/2022 10:52

I just saw he emailed. Most tradespeople I know don't really do emails much. You need to phone.

Our payment terms are 30 days and you need to be able to pay that bill whether or not the insurance has paid out at that point. Other people will want payment on completion.

ExcuseeeeMe · 22/03/2022 10:55

Yes it’s put people off?. They won’t want to wait till your insurance clears. Lots of messing around waiting on getting the all clear , submitting quotes then waiting on insurance company paying out . Right now so many as busy they can pick and choose who to work for.

ExcuseeeeMe · 22/03/2022 10:56

Wow please excuse all the typos on my post .

Justjoinedforthis · 22/03/2022 13:45

Thanks for all the replies, makes total sense. I’m now so annoyed at how shitty the whole insurance system is if you can’t use it!

Insurance are supposed to sort it out for you?

You don't arrange the work in my experience - they do.

It'll put them off for two reasons. Firstly, as some insurers want 3 quotes, they may just think you're wasting their time and they are unlikely to get the work, so simply won't bother quoting. Secondly, they may think they'll be paid late if you don't pay them prior to receiving the insurance pay out (which can take months!).

My dh is a painter, he got a job cancelled with a days notice as the insurance company changed their mind at the last minute. He had already forked out over £300 for materials.

He now wouldn't accept any job if he knew it was through insurance, unless the customer themselves were paying.

Not in my experience. They generally ask the householder to provide a certain number of quotes and they then authorise the work.
