Can security cameras save footage to a web server?

I'm a total beginner with this. I'm looking into buying a security camera for my house. I don't want to use an SD card because I want to know the footage is safe offsite somewhere.

I know there are cloud services but I'm looking for a free option if possible. I have a web server - is it possible for the camera to store the footage on that? Or can anybody recommend a free cloud-based storage solution? Thanks.

We have amazon blink system, you pay for the cameras and then there is no ongoing cost. The clips are saved on a cloud and then you can download any you want to keep.

You say you have a web server - where is it, is it a physical device or a virtual one?

@Fleurty - I've just had a look at that, but it says that it includes a free trial of the Blink Subscription Plan. Can I ask how you have no ongoing costs with it please?

Do you not want a system with a hard-drive?
We have had a Swann system for several yours and it is great (1tb). Recently moved and will be fitting a similar system at the new house.

@Ifailed - I have a Cloud VPS server in a London data centre for my business. It has plenty of spare space and so I was wondering if I could make use of some of that.

@Dougieowner - I'm worried that any physical device (SD card or hard drive) could be stolen at the same time. If footage can be stored remotely somewhere, I would feel much happier about it!

I've got cctv which I can playback and store photos and videos. I've been using it to watch a fox jump from veg bed to veg bed. I haven't found how to share the videos though.

I wouldn't use it to save photos and videos of people unless they were up to no good and then I'd contact the Police.

@Tashface,
It can be done, but an off the shelf solution might be expensive. It sounds like an ideal project for someone whose interested in IT.
You'd need an old PC (or Raspberry Pi type thing), a free copy of Linux and a camera that is network enabled, either wired or wireless. It wouldn't be too hard to set up a system to take a feed from the camera(s) and save them on your server.

I think the subscription plan is new with Blink. I bought my first camera a few years ago and cloud storage was free then and remains free to me as a legacy user, but new users need to subscribe.

Fleurty · 20/03/2022 13:46

Ah OK, I got my blink system before there was any subscription. I wouldnt have bought it with an ongoing cost attached either.

Tashface · 21/03/2022 06:05

@Lilboots and @Fleurty - ahh, that's a shame, seems like I have missed the boat!

@Ifailed - thank you for your help. I don't suppose you would have any links which give more details about this, would you? No worries if not.

Did a quick google, and this seems to fit everything you want, including the ability to upload files to a remote server.

I did cobble something together years ago, using a usb web cam to control a canon DSLR to try and take still photos of a bird feeder using various bits of open source code on a Linux system, all running on an ancient PC. The web can acted as a motion detector to fire a shot on the DSLR.

If I could do this, then I'm confident that a keen coder can do the same, especially with a package like the one above.

@Ifailed - I'll take a look at that, thank you very much for your help Smile
