Is there a way of sending cars back to main road rather than down rat run - Google map problem

We are interested in buying a house. It's in a very rural area, on a lane. The lane has always always been very quiet, but in the last year or so, it's suddenly become the way Google sends all the traffic. It's been fairly disastrous for everyone on the lane - and it's very much not the way, if that makes sense. If you stick to the main road, it takes about 30 seconds longer, and sending all the traffic that way causes chaos with people having to reverse a lot and not enough pull in areas. It's also causing a million potholes in the lanes. The main road is really not that much further at all. Is there anyway of flagging this to Google?

There are a couple of roads round here with big yellow signs saying "do not follow satnav"
So I'm guessing google is a bit if a nightmare, and the council have taken control best they can.

I was thinking of posting a similar question but from the drivers point of view. I'm a courier and have spent most of my morning down single track lanes thanks to Google maps. I didn't know the area at all but I'm sure there should have been some main roads somewhere. I've looked at settings on the app but can't seem to sort the problem so will be watching this thread with interest. I have tried using Waze as an alternative but it talks too much Grin

@Lathemistress Yes, I think a lot of the "new" traffic is courier etc just following the satnav. Which is fair enough, but it causes chaos! The traffic gets bonkers in summer.
Good point about signs, @MaizeAmaze. I suppose just a matter of going to the council for those. But there are several roads affected in this way round here - surely Google must have a way of flagging problems. (I have looked - can't see anything on their site.)

I think councils will put up signs if it's actively dangerous, but haven't seen them if it's just... not the way. This isn't quite dangerous (although it would be if eg an ambulance thought it could go that way during the summer) but it leads to chaos.

We have previously fed back to Google that something it thought was a road in rural France was barely a rutted track through a field (fun trip!) and they corrected it quite quickly

bloodywhitecat · 18/03/2022 14:22

Do you have 'Quiet Lanes' in your area?

Chakraleaf · 18/03/2022 14:41

You may find the people are local. I don't use sat nav but everyone knows the back roads are generally quicker here.

Wilfulchaos · 18/03/2022 15:59

@chakraleaf They're not local! The way the volume of traffic goes up hugely during the summer with lots of baffled tourists in shiny cars looking terrified makes that clear.

Thank you, @SilverHairedCat
Will try that!
