Automatic lighting for kids room

Afternoon all,

Wondering whether anyone as found a good solution which will turn off the kids bedroom lights when they leave the room? Perhaps also even controlled via a mobile app. We'd rather have something which works on the light switch itself rather than having to buy wifi controlled light bulbs.

With the cost of living going up, we need a solution which will help us save on electric.

Thanks all

Smart bulbs won't solve the problem of electric cost as they need to be permanently on stand by to respond to things like apps. So you're better off training the kids to do it themselves and then when they lights are off they're actually off not draining electricity.

automatic lighting is horrible & annoying. there are types that work on motion sensors which they have at work, but then if you sit still for a while the lights suddenly go off. another place I know has super-bright automatic lighting that comes on if you make the slightest movement, which is almost as bad.

modern LED bulbs use v little electricity so saving on lighting is probably not worth worrying about. Look for savings elsewhere.

A 5 watt LED bulb left on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year would cost about £12 at a unit cost of 28p. You’ll spend far more on the “solution”

I don't get how smart bulbs use energy on standby? They are effectively off? Any energy must be really small surely.

They need electricity to power the module that controls them. The use is negligible, but not zero. Wouldn’t worry about it though.

Glad I posted.

Summary is to locate savings elsewhere... I'd guess biggest area is heating.

Thanks all !

Regardless of cost, we used to have endless argument about lights being left on. The solution was Philips Hue lights and motion sensors everywhere, including bathroom fan.

If set up properly they work brilliantly, also great for security when away as you can programme them, or have motion sensor outside, "if motion after 1AM turn bathroom and hall lights on full" etc. Works with Siri and Alex so you can use voice commands.
