Cost of packing and moving

We're moving from a 1 bed flat in London to the.north east of England. I've been quoted £2,500. This seems a lot.

Anyone got any ideas on whether that is normal? Thanks!

It is high but does it involve an overnight? There’s only so many hours they are allowed to work, so if it’s pack up one day, unpack the next then it’s probably fair.

We are expecting about £800 for a local move, 3 bed.

Ilkleymoor · 17/03/2022 11:24

Yeh it will be an overnight.

Daft really, I knew it would be 1,500 minimum, so was ready to £2k but for some reason £2.5k seems mind blowing!

Thanks for your thoughts.

We paid 2k to move from SE to Wales. 3 bed house though. I would get several quotes.

Ilkleymoor · 17/03/2022 11:49

Have approached another 3 companies so we will see.

Is it a London based company? Have you tried companies based at the area you're moving to?

mindutopia · 17/03/2022 13:09

A 1bed flat means you must not have much stuff. Honestly, I’d do it yourself and hire a van. We moved ourselves from a 4 bed house with 2 dc using a van and our usual family car. It took about 3 days to totally have everything in (this was a 3-3.5 hour round trip), but it cost us just petrol. I can’t imagine you couldn’t shove most of a 1 bed flat in a box truck and bank the £2500.

Ilkleymoor · 17/03/2022 13:46

@mindutopia this would be a good idea except my partner doesn't drive and I've only just got my first car! So my driving just isn't up to it.

Plus a few health things means getting Packers will stop this being a bad experience.

Oh well, life will be much more affordable (and roomier!) When we move!

I’m moving a one bed equivalent (as not taking much) from London to the NW- quoted £990 on average

Ariela · 17/03/2022 14:20

Given the current fuel price, and working time regulations for drivers (they have to take breaks, not breaks unpacking the lorry) I really think that's VERY reasonable.

dreammattemousse · 17/03/2022 14:25

We are paying £1700
Literally for them to move our stuff from one house to another 20 miles away
On the same day so no over nights
No packing. Includes materials like boxes and bubble wrap.

And that was the cheapest quote!
One was £3k (that did involve them storing stuff over night but still)

Southwest

There was absolutely no way on this earth we would move ourselves

Alexaplaysomething · 17/03/2022 14:28

For that price I would sell any big items, pack my clothes into the car and buy new stuff in NE. Things tend to get damaged in a move anyway and may not fit your new place.

lobsteroll · 17/03/2022 15:54

I've just been quoted £2.5k plus VAT for a 4 bed house moving about 200 miles. It was slightly more than expected but not wildly so. I thought it would be over £2k

Ilkleymoor · 17/03/2022 15:58

@PaniniHead would you mind sharing who you got quotes from?

OP posts:
PaniniHead · 17/03/2022 16:18

The best quote was with Pickfords

Ilkleymoor · 17/03/2022 16:23

@PaniniHead thank you!

Hav got another company coming round tomorrow, a recommendation from a friend,so we will see

OP posts:
Ilkleymoor · 17/03/2022 16:28

In case it's of any use to anyone, just did a basic quote on the Pickford's website and it would be £900 cheaper to do it on the Thursday and not the Friday! So this might be what will make the difference.

happystrummer · 17/03/2022 17:58

Ive been quoted around 1300 plus VAT for 3 bed flat packing and moving to Bristol from North London.

happystrummer · 17/03/2022 18:00

JA Coles they moved my mate and were fantastic so I didnt bother getting a quote. I havent exchanged yet so not quite there but theyve been really helpful

ISeeTheLight · 17/03/2022 18:05

We did a similar move a few years ago. Get quotes from companies based in the North East, they're cheaper. We went with Watsons who are based in Darlington, they quoted using the quote from another company (for size lorry needed etc)

Ilkleymoor · 17/03/2022 18:22

Thanks for info! And possible companies to use. @happystrummer ja Cole are coming to quote tomorrow, also recommended by friend, fingers crossed!

I paid 2k to move from zone 2 to zone 5 london last year - a 2 bed flat, so given that it’s an overnight job I don’t think it’s outrageous (I got a few quotes, I had 50 boxes & usual furniture (2 beds, 2 sofas, a bureau, wardrobe, table &’chairs)

They charged £400 to pack up the house and that was SO worth it

happystrummer · 18/03/2022 07:18

Good luck with Cole's. Guy who came stayed for 2 hours chatting and no question i had was too stupid. Same with my neighbour. No hard sell. Just a lovely bloke. They manage mover's stress perfectly Smile

Twiglets1 · 18/03/2022 19:00

Quotes vary wildly so make sure you get 3. We got quoted about 2.5k to move from
A 2 bed flat in London to Berkshire by Pickfords. We have chosen another company who are only charging 1.5k

JudgeRindersMinder · 18/03/2022 19:02

This time last year it cost us £1800 for packing a 4 bed house and moving all of a mile!

Vikingmama79 · 18/03/2022 22:02

Try Gallagher’s based in the North East. They do National moves, we only moved locally but we found them competitive and would definitely recommend.
