Replace line on a 10 foot washing pole

Not sure if I've posted in the right place

I have a washing line which uses pulleys, the poles are at least 10 foot tall if not taller.

Recently I've noticed that the plastic of the line has started to break, like when frost gets to it and it snaps. This means that the line is stuck on one side, the pulley won't let it budge.

I can still pull the line up on the other side but now the line isn't straight iyswim

Is there anyway of replacing the line when the pulleys are up that high? Would it be a case of having to take the pole out of the concrete, put a new line in and then reset it in place?

Any advice is really appreciated. Tried googling but can't find an answer. I love my high line and would hate to lose it.

Could you attach the new line to the old one (knot them together), pull it through into place then get rid of the old one

That is genius, thank you! Well, I think I understand Grin

The old line is rope covered in hard plastic so I hope any knot would still feed through the pulley but I guess if not I would just pull the old one back and continue using that one 🤔

Stepladders were invented for that sort of height.

Use a ladder.

Use a ladder or tie the next one on and pull or tie a thinner bit of string on and then the next one so there’s less bulk in the knots. Washing line with plastic coating can be bought at most hardware shops.

I understand ladder is the most obvious choice however I am a single mum who is 5 foot tall and I only own a small step ladder Grin I think I also underestimated the height of the poles, they seem to be almost level with the top of the first floor window.

Thank you for the suggestions of tying the lines together. Have a new one being delivered today Smile

I actually can't picture what you mean if I'm honest- how on earth do you hang washing on a line 10ft up!? ( sorry if that's a daft question and really obvious to others)

Iknowacrackingowlsanctuary · 16/03/2022 08:15

The poles have pulleys at the top and the line comes down the pole and is tied up half way down. I unwind the line at one or both poles, it comes down to my chest height to peg my washing on and then I pull the line back up again.

I think it's quite an old fashioned set up but was here when I moved in and I love it. Especially for bedsheets, and my bingo wings Grin

I had relations in Lowestoft, and the old houses all had them, repurposed masts from fishing boats

PigletJohn · 16/03/2022 10:36

To join them, strip the plastic cover off the first few inches, and join the cords. Some people know how to splice ropes. I might try a bootlace crimp as I have the right tool. Possibly you could join each to a short length of nylon twine, to avoid a big knot.

meloncolic · 16/03/2022 10:39

Or you could not knot them but join them smoothly with some duct tape - the join only has to last until you’ve rethreaded the new one through the pulley, right?
