White washing?

So we have an old building and there’s an outbuilding where the walls are flint and they have very grey, flaked what was once I am assuming white wash on them. Or lime wash?

I want to be sympathetic to the age of the building and use the right materials. It’s not plastered though so what paint should I use to freshen it up?

I wouldn’t mind avoiding limewash if possible as I know it get flakey and rubs off. But don’t want to use the wrong paint or anything that will just fall off because the underneath is whatever the traditional paint is.

I’m sure it hasn’t been painted since about 1930!

Traditional paint advice please!!

Farrow and ball and little Greene do lime wash in loads of different colours. I have also heard good things about mike Wye lime products. There might be a more modern version but you will need to use something that is water permiable or you will trap water in the walls and cause damage to the building so it will be safer to stick with lime wash.

It looks like these silicate paints might be what you are looking for. www.mikewye.co.uk/product/earthborn-silicate-masonry-paint/
