Sent my financials to the estate agent instead of the mortgage advisor

I accidentally sent 6 months worth of payslips and bank statements to my estate agent instead of my mortgage advisor.

Said estate agent has clearly opened them and discussed my salary with a colleague that happens to know my friend. My friend has then messaged be about how much I earn. Surely the estate agents aren’t allowed to discuss this personal information with each other? And especially people outside the business.

I know it’s my fault for not checking who I sent it to. I followed the email thread on my phone and the emails got tangled up.

Of course they’re not allowed to discuss your personal details with other people, even if you sent them in error! I’d be looking at making a complaint, I don’t know who to but I’m sure someone will be along who does.

Hugasauras · 15/03/2022 11:15

Absolutely complain, that's shocking!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 15/03/2022 11:19

You can absolutely complain about this under GDPR.

The agent knew your data had been sent in error, and instead of deleting it and letting you know about the slip up, they discussed it with someone who knew you personally.

You can complain the to agent directly, and if you’re unhappy with their response you can escalate it to the Information Commissioner.

That's bloody outrageous! Are they a member of the association of estate agents or whatever it's called? I'd be putting in a formal complaint to the agency itself, any association they're a member of and also report them under GDPR regs - if the message wasn't for them, they should have deleted it immediately. To discuss it with an external person who knows you though, how dim are they?? Your friend doesn't come out of this well either!

DenholmElliot · 15/03/2022 11:20

Yes that's shocking I'd definitely be reporting that

RidingMyBike · 15/03/2022 11:40

Complain to them directly as this is a very clear breach of GDPR. You can then escalate to the Information Commissioner.

What they should have done is emailed you straight back to say they'd received this in error and would be deleted. Then immediately deleted them without discussing or showing to anyone else!

Starseeking · 15/03/2022 11:58

They should never have done anything with the information, having received it inadvertently. Definitely a GDPR breach, I'd be reporting that.

Summersdreaming · 15/03/2022 13:05

Aside from anything else why on earth would your "friend" do that??

Bellex · 15/03/2022 14:53

I’ve rung up and complained to the owner of the company as he is friends with my dad. (Something I’ve never let on to the agent)

He said he’ll look into, he’s asked for my friends contact info so he can speak to him on how they told him.

I think my friend probably didn’t think of it in a logical way as she seemed to have dropped it in conversation over the weekend. Rather he’d told me though
