Definitely a gloss?
My Dad is a painter and generally uses Leyland Trade Acrylic Eggshell. Very hard wearing, good coverage. As its water and not oil based it doesn't yellow over time. They do a water based gloss which he also rates.

Ok thank you I have no idea what to buy when it comes to painting

I like Dulux Trade Eggshell.
I really don't like the sheen of gloss, or the tendency to yellow.

Leyland trade as PP suggests is good. I prefer satinwood over gloss personally

I don't use gloss for woodwork, I use eggshell instead. Much nicer finish!

Just make sure you get a decent trade paint. The cheaper brands have less pigment so don't cover as well.
Gloss looks dated now, and as PPs have said, satin and eggshell are a more up to date choice. PP is also correct about waterbased being the better choice to avoid yellowing, however it requires an undercoat if going over existing paintwork, whereas oil based can be painted straight on (after the usual keying and cleaning you'd need to do regardless). As a result, if it is an area that gets plenty of daylight then I would use oil based, as UV prevents the yellowing. Oil based is also harder wearing.

Trade paint.
If you're not experienced, I'd stick to water-based. The better quality water-based ones are very good these days. Oil based gives a good finish, is harder wearing, can be applied very thin so keeps the detailing in mouldings better, and is faster to apply, but only if you know what you're doing. If you don't have a light touch and know exactly how much to brush it out it's messy and slow and you'll get a poor finish. It also takes AGES to dry.... SkankingMopoke is right about undercoats too. If you're doing water-based on oil-based, especially on gloss, either sand or undercoat or both.

Definitely a trade paint for the best result. Dulux Trade or Johnstone's Trade are often recommended.
I prefer satin rather than gloss.

People don't tend to gloss anymore it would be eggshell/satin.

ukborn · 14/03/2022 20:36

No gloss - use eggshell.

Earlybird00 · 14/03/2022 20:50

Just finished wood work in brilliant white egg shell so much easier to work with than gloss

Sunshineandrainbow · 14/03/2022 20:54

Recently bought Leyland satin from screwfix. Really liked it.

Little Greene Tom’s Oil Eggshell. Easy to apply, goes a long way, huge range of colours and it’s pretty much bombproof. It’s not cheap, but it still looks great five years after painting.
