What to do with the Batcave

Have been asked by my son for ideas of how best to organise this space in his house for storage. It is about a metre wide and is the depth of the house, under the stairs and has a door at each end. The floor is tiled. He will have a washer dryer at one end but then he doesn't know what else to do.

I had no ideas at all - but then I thought there are bound to be some people here who do, so please, any ideas will be much appreciated. Smile

You could shelve it floor to ceiling on one side maybe?

Whitewash it, make it nice and fresh and bright.

Or turn it into an office - build a desk in it about halfway down so it's a split room. Or do any kids need a den? Or adults for that matter?

You could always whack a wall up to split it between uses - keep a section as the utility room and use the rest for something else?

Honestly I'd fill it full of stuff, logs for the burner, mop, Hoover, ironing board etc. That's not very helpful but being that narrow you can't really have shelving

I think the space is probably too narrow to have shelves but you could possibly store things in the vertical space. We have a system in the garage where we can basically house the bikes up and out of the way, the same with the ski equipment.

How high is the ceiling? And how tall is he? He could shelve above his head height.

He could also hang a Sheila maid from the ceiling to dry clothes.

RandomMess · 13/03/2022 20:13

It's only wide enough to hang stuff along one wall with shallow shelves above head height.

Bookshelves along one wall. Wine on the other.

Depends what he needs. If there is a door each end you could put up shelving that's backs on to each other and meets in the middle. So enter one side and you have cleaning products, hang the mop, vacuum, broom etc. then the other side more like a pantry to store any bulky buys or vegetables would be good if cool and usually dark.

We have very long eaves approx 1m wide. We use it for storage. All kinds of stuff in marked boxes that we need but not every day. If it was on the ground floor I'd put bikes in there!

You could put a pulley system in and hang stuff from the ceiling.

Secret passageway obviously. Paint it white, have lighting and lovely new tiles and maybe a lock each door so also a panic room. Box with water, charged phone and crisps.

Thanks for the suggestions - he seems to like the idea of the clothes airer, high up shelves and dividing the space into two. All your suggestions are far better than his own ideas of a bowling alley or shooting range. Hmm
