Help me decorate my living room!

Ok so our house is a small two bedroom new build (8 years old now) so when we moved in everything was just magnolia, carpets, walls etc. we've decorated the bedrooms a few years ago but my main bug bear is the living room. Other than the kitchen it is the only room downstairs so it's used a lot. We have two young DC and the youngest recently got left alone for a maximum of 5 mins whilst me and DH were getting ready for work and decided to take a pencil to almost every wall in the room Angry. I've been wanting to redecorate the room for a while as it desperately needs a new carpet but DH wanted to wait to do the carpets until DC we're old enough to stop spilling everything on it.

So now the walls are ruined I've decided to part decorate it. I want to get it looking nice and the carpets will just probably have to wait another year. When we decorated the bedrooms the whole grey style was in fashion so we went with a grey feature wall for both rooms but now I think it's been done too much. I can post pictures if needed but my living room is quite a good size. It's got an alcove bit where the sofa goes. I still like the idea of a feature wall so I was thinking of maybe doing the alcove in one colour and the rest in another. But I'm crap at creative ideas and that's why I need your help!!

I'm rubbish without seeing things but how big is it, are the ceilings low, which way does it face? Eg. I wouldn't do a dark feature wall in a North facing room room with low ceilings unless it's huge.. are you changing the sofa or keeping?

We definitely need a photo!

What style do you like? Minimal? Country chic? Ultra modern etc?

I've chickened out of posting actual photos as it's such a mess at the moment but I have drawn the layout of the room. I'll try and take some proper pics once I've tidied up.

To answer some of the questions: it's a south west facing room with two big patio doors so it gets lots of sunlight. I like a modern style but also to look homely if that's even possible Grin

Lots of plants, wooden or hard floor (game changer with little kids & a clumsy dh) throws, cushions, fairy lights & a mirror to make it homely. I'd go for restful green and neutral tones and just aim for a cosy and calm vibe. Pinterest is your friend.

With that layout I don't think I'd make the alcove the feature, it isn't the focus of the room (I'm no kind of expert though!!)

That very light sage green is still popular and would look good in a light airy room, and you don't need to be matchy with your furniture and cushions.

This plus the PP asking about the direction the room faces. Also what sort of feeling do you want in there? Eg cozy, light, peaceful? Is it a room used all year round, both day and night? I think that makes a big difference to the sorts of colours you'd choose. Eg we chose a really dark green as we wanted cozy and enveloping, and mostly use the room in the winter evenings. It is a bit dark for a room that used a lot in daytime, but it is only the DCs in there during the day and we are often outside on Summer evenings.

If you have a mural artist in your midst, I would definitely consider using scrubbable paint (and buy a can of cheap hairspray to keep in the cleaning cupboard for the day they find a forgotten biro...).

Put a rug down to distract from the tired carpet, I bought an IKEA outdoor carpet as it's easier to clean. Wayfair have outdoor carpets as well.

I screenshot these the other day as we are looking for lounge ideas and have 2 kids who have grubby hands! Leaning more towards the pinkish colours for us

Thanks for the suggestions. I really like the idea of doing a green colour so I think I'll go and get some samples today!

Farrow and Ball have some good info and pics on green colours/schemes www.farrow-ball.com/green-paint

Green as PPs suggest, or if you like a feature wall maybe navy, with a creamy colour on the other walls.
