Oundle - inherited property

So I've inherited a property in Oundle! Big shock, boring back story, won't elaborate. Who knows the area? It's a slightly run down 2 bed period priory and will need some work.

Do I sell or rent? Anyone got inside info on the surrounding area? Definitely won't be living there, my family is too big for the area I think. The only people of colour seem to be students at the private school, not many locals from what I can tell from our infrequent visits. Willing to be told I'm wrong but I think we'd feel uncomfortable there.

I have family living there. Rental market is brisk due to schooling and commutable distance to london. Would recommend you contact local agent who I'm sure would be keen to help

Oundle is nice if you can be bothered/afford to do the work then rent. If not sell and enjoy the pennies

If you don’t live anywhere near, then I honestly wouldn’t bother with all the time and hassle of organising renovations. As for renting as it is, we had the same question with an aunt’s house - nice area but needed modernising - consensus was that apart from rent being lower, plus tax, landlord expenses, a managing agent’s fees - plus of course possible bad luck with tenants - it just wasn’t worth it.

I’d sell as it is, but price will be key, so I’d ask agents for a realistic valuation for a reasonably quick sale - not what they think you want to hear.
Relatives who were handling sale of the aunt’s house and lived nowhere near, took an ‘optimistic’ valuation as correct*, so it took a long time to sell, and only after several price drops.
*Not out of greed, but as holders of power of attorney for the aunt who’d moved to a care home, they felt obliged to get the best price for her, for covering the fees.

Don’t rent - there’s v little profit in it these days (I have several properties I rent - I wouldn’t start out now)

Sell it, use the money due your pension pot, kids education, put on the horses or whatever. But don’t become a landlord!!
